Dear Mr. Perez:
I have received your letter about your concerns and complaints about our new Modern Art exhibit on Rauschenberg’s Art. We here at the Museum of Art want to apologize for your poor experience at the new gallery. In this letter, we would like to address your concerns and explain why we choose to display Rauschenberg’s Art.
To start, we here at the Museum had been discussing for the past few years to expanding our collection by adding Modern Art. While we here at the Museum have a fond passion for earlier Art styles, we want to introduce some new features that moved beyond simple observation from our patrons. The question of “What is Art” is one we continually strive to answer and observe here. We felt that when the opportunity came about to display original Rauschenberg pieces, it was a chance to have our patrons ask the same question.
To your point of the Rauschenberg pieces’ basicness, his view of modern art was minimalist. He wanted to test the bounds of the art concept and see how little work he could do on the pieces, and they still are considered art. This comes to play in two of the pieces you sighted Automobile Tire Prin tandWhite Canvases. To your next point about expandingDe Kooning, ErasedRauschenberg was a Great Friend and Admired of De Kooning. The work was meant to scandalize and bring into question again, “What is Art.”
We apologize again if you feel you were cheated out of an experience, as that is never the staff or curators’ intention. We don’t believe it was a violation of ethics to show a different view of art and its portrait in the modern world. And we will continue our search for art that questions those bounds in both the public eyes and our investors.
I hope that this letter offered some explanation for our decision to include Rauschenberg in our gallery. I want to remind you that it is a temporary exhibit and will be leaving in a few months for another exhibit to come in, which I can not disclose at this time. Furthermore, we do take into consideration what our shareholders and investors want to see in the Museum. If there is a piece or type of art you desire to see on our campus, please attend one of our board or investor meetings to stay your concerns or input on exhibits.
Again Thank you for your letter and Concerns
