Adolf Wermuth – Der Beamte, der Groß-Berlin schuf Historical Editorial Illustration
This project presents a series of historical illustrations created for Dietmar Strauch’s book Adolf Wermuth – Der Beamte, der Groß-Berlin schuf, which examines the life and civic legacy of Adolf Wermuth, a central figure in the formation of Greater Berlin.
The illustration approach is rooted in early twentieth-century print aesthetics, referencing archival engravings, period photography, and historical documentation. Restrained line work, minimal tonal treatment, and balanced compositions were used to echo the visual language of the era while maintaining clarity and readability within a contemporary editorial context.
Rather than functioning as decorative elements, the illustrations act as visual companions to the narrative, supporting key moments, environments, and relationships with historical sensitivity. The focus was on accuracy, atmosphere, and narrative restraint, allowing the illustrations to reinforce the historical content without overpowering it.
This work explores illustration as a quiet interpretive layer, translating complex historical context into visual form with discipline, respect, and timeless character. Author - Dietmar Strauch Editorial Design - Lisa Vanovitch Editorial Illustration - Wishva Hettiarachchi
