ORA | Ventilated Toothbrush Enclosure

The Brief

Design a portable toothbrush enclosure that solves a common hygiene problem: bacteria growth from trapped moisture in sealed cases. The solution needed to balance protection during travel with adequate airflow for natural drying.

My Role

Industrial Designer, Inventor & Product Design Consultant. Responsible for the full design cycle from research and concept sketching through to 3D modeling and photorealistic rendering.
Tools used: Fusion 360, Adobe Photoshop

The Problem

Daily toothbrush cases often focus on protection by fully sealing the brush head. In reality, toothbrushes are frequently stored while still damp, especially during travel, and sealed cases can trap moisture over time. ORA explores a simple alternative by balancing protection with ventilation.

Design Approach

The concept is designed as a compact two-piece clamshell enclosure that shields the toothbrush head from external contamination while allowing residual moisture to escape naturally. Integrated ventilation slots support airflow without exposing the bristles, addressing common hygiene concerns found in fully sealed caps.

Form & Material Logic

ORA is a concept that explores how small, everyday personal care objects can be rethought through simple geometry, intuitive interaction, and honest functional logic.
Form development is guided by an abstracted tooth geometry, used to inform proportions and surface transitions rather than create a literal representation. The result is a calm, functional silhouette that subtly references its purpose without relying on novelty. Material selection focuses on food-grade polypropylene to support hygiene, durability, recyclability, and efficient mass production.

Interaction Design

The opening mechanism is intentionally intuitive and familiar, inspired by the natural open-close action associated with oral care. A pinch-to-open interaction allows one-handed use, making ORA practical for both daily routines and travel situations. Internally, the enclosure is sized to fit standard toothbrush head dimensions without compressing bristles, ensuring broad compatibility across brands.

Outcome

ORA demonstrates how a small, overlooked personal care object can be elevated through thoughtful industrial design. The concept is designed with injection molding in mind, ready for prototyping and production.
