Modern Classic – A Conceptual Revival of a Watch Brand

The Brief

A client approached with a vision to develop a watch concept inspired by the design language of classic minimalist timepieces. The goal: create something that feels like a natural evolution of restrained, proportion-driven watch design, not a retro imitation or an over-modernized departure.

My Role

Industrial Designer & Product Design Consultant. Responsible for concept development, initial sketching, 3D modeling, and final concept renderings.
Tools used: Procreate, Autodesk Fusion 360, Adobe Photoshop

The Challenge

Minimal watch design is deceptively difficult. Remove too much and the dial feels empty. Add too much and you lose the restraint that makes the genre work. The concept needed to respect the heritage of classic minimalist watchmaking while standing on its own as a contemporary piece.

Design Approach

Concept exploration — Started with multiple initial concepts based on the client's inspiration references. Explored different case profiles, lug geometries, and dial compositions. The client selected the direction that best balanced sophistication with simplicity.
Case and proportion — The case profile is slim and confident. Lug geometry feels resolved, and the transitions between surfaces are clean without being showy. Every curve earns its place.
Dial composition — Intentionally minimal, but not empty. Spacing, hand lengths, and index placement are measured rather than decorative. The philosophy here: removing elements is harder than adding them. There's patience in the design.
Design integrity — The concept avoids direct vintage imitation and resists over-modernization. It suggests a watch that could have naturally evolved through decades of focused design refinement rather than trend-chasing.

Outcome

Delivered finalized concept renderings for the client's review and marketing use. The project demonstrates a disciplined approach to product design: starting from client inspiration, developing multiple directions, and refining the selected concept into a resolved, production-plausible form. This is not a statement piece. It's a long-term object, designed to age well.
