A proposed concept for a solar-powered electric vehicle charging station, combining architectural design principles with industrial design thinking. The goal was to create a structure that functions as both infrastructure and public space, not just a place to plug in.
My Role
This was a self-initiated concept completed in 2022, drawing on both my architecture knowledge and industrial design experience. I handled the full design process: spatial planning, structural form development, 3D modeling, and final visualization.
Architecture meets industrial design — Charging stations sit at the intersection of building and product. The canopy structure needed to feel permanent and considered like architecture, while the charging units, signage, and user touchpoints required the precision of industrial design. I approached it from both disciplines simultaneously.
Modular layout — The station accommodates four electric vehicles with a clear circulation logic. A dedicated pedestrian walking path separates foot traffic from vehicle movement, a detail that most charging station designs overlook.
Solar integration — The roof structure doubles as a solar array, generating renewable energy on-site. The canopy angle and panel orientation were designed to maximize solar exposure while providing full weather protection for vehicles and users below.
Drainage system — An integrated drainage system handles rainwater runoff from the large canopy surface, preventing pooling around the charging bays and pedestrian areas.
Revenue potential — The structure includes dedicated advertising space on the canopy panels, turning the station into a potential revenue generator beyond charging fees. This makes the business case stronger for operators considering installation.

Outcome
A complete concept for a solar-powered EV charging station that treats infrastructure as a design opportunity. The project demonstrates how architectural spatial thinking and industrial design precision can combine to create public infrastructure that's functional, sustainable, and commercially viable.
