Koopaa — Designing Trustless Group Savings for Underbanked Communities
Koopaa digitizes traditional group savings systems (Ajo/Esusu/ROSCAs) using stablecoins and Solana smart contracts to eliminate fraud, missed payments, and trust breakdown.
The Real Problem
Traditional group savings systems rely entirely on human trust:
One missed payment breaks the entire cycle
One dishonest collector can disappear with pooled funds
No transparent records → constant disputes
Underbanked users have no formal protection or recourse
Key Insight:
The problem isn’t saving money.
The problem is coordinating trust among multiple people over time.
Koopaa Homescreen
Why Existing Solutions Fail
Banks exclude these users
Fintech apps focus on individual savings, not group dynamics
Crypto tools are too complex and intimidating
Informal savings are culturally trusted but technically fragile
Design Gap:
There was no system that respected cultural saving behavior while removing human risk.
Primary Design Objective
Design a mobile-first experience that:
Feels familiar to users of informal savings
Requires zero trust in individuals
Makes every contribution and payout verifiable
Abstracts blockchain complexity completely
Short video showing the savings card interaction
My Role
Role: Product Designer (UI/UX)
Responsibilities:
Product thinking & UX strategy
User flows & interaction design
Design system & visual direction
Collaboration with blockchain engineers
Translating smart contract logic into human-readable experiences
Key Design Challenges
Challenge 1: Designing Trust Without Humans
Users needed to believe the system was fair without relying on a person.
Design Response:
Transparent contribution timelines
Visible payout order
Immutable transaction history
Clear smart contract explanations in plain language
Challenge 2: Making Web3 Invisible
Most users don’t care about Solana or USDC — they care about their money.
Design Response:
Wallet-first onboarding with minimal flow
USDC framed as “digital cash” not “crypto”
Blockchain actions translated into familiar financial language
Challenge 3: Group Risk & Anxiety
Fear of being stuck or losing money kills adoption.
Design Response:
Emergency exit mechanics
Missed payment states
Real-time contribution status indicators
Automated reminders via push/SMS/email

Visual System (Keep It Intentional)
Warm, friendly colors to reduce crypto intimidation
Clear typography for financial clarity
Simple iconography for low-literacy accessibility
Minimal animations to reinforce state changes (paid, pending, completed)
Impact & Outcomes on Pre-Launch
Contested for 2025 Solana Breakout Hackathon and move to top 5 best innovative projects out of over 1000 submissions
Design outcome
Reduced cognitive load during onboarding
Faster understanding of group rules
Increased perceived trust through transparency
Strong positive feedback from early user testing
Designing Koopaa reinforced that great fintech UX is not about features — it’s about reducing fear, clarifying incentives, and making trust visible.
