ShortPress - News You Crave, Simplified.

Parag S.

Overview:

ShortPress is a mobile news platform offering personalized, summarized news with modern, accessible features like audio playback, translation, and user-selected interests — all delivered through a clean, minimal interface optimized for readability and user convenience.

Problem Statement:

In an age of information overload, users often struggle to stay updated without investing significant time in reading lengthy news articles. Existing news platforms either lack personalization, overwhelm users with cluttered interfaces, or fail to provide concise, easy-to-consume formats.
For non-native speakers, accessibility barriers like limited translation options further restrict news consumption. Additionally, few platforms integrate audio playback for on-the-go users or support a seamless light/dark mode experience for improved readability.

Design Challenges:

Balancing Simplicity with Functionality: Deliver features like summaries, audio, translation, and personalization without overwhelming the UI.
Creating a Smart, Evolving Experience: The product needed to adapt over time using user interaction data, making content recommendations smarter and more relevant with ML algorithms.
Ensuring Accessibility and Inclusivity: Integrating translation and audio support in a way that's subtle yet readily accessible to enhance engagement for a global, diverse user base.
Maintaining Visual Consistency: Designing intuitive layouts that remain effective across both light and dark modes for varied user preferences.

Design Approach:

To solve the challenges, We focused on building an intuitive, user-centered mobile experience that balances simplicity with functionality, ensuring accessible, engaging news consumption:

Personalized Onboarding:

The onboarding flow introduces users to key app benefits — summarized news, tailored content, and simplicity.

Minimal, Distraction-Free News Reading:

Designed clean, clutter-free interface that presents news in summarized format for quick reading. Subtle, intuitive controls allow users to translate content, listen to audio playback, and easily save or share articles — all without overwhelming the user experience.
Translation support and audio playback, allowing users to consume news across language barriers or on-the-go.

Loading Interaction to Address Latency:

To enhance user engagement and manage unavoidable system delays (fetching news, summarizing content, and generating audio playback), an interactive, visually appealing loading animation was introduced.
This solution reduces perceived wait time, keeps users engaged, and subtly communicates that content is being personalized and prepared in real time.

Search & Explore for Quick Content Discovery:

Users can easily search for specific news or keywords and explore curated categories like Politics, Sports, Technology, and more, ensuring relevant news is always accessible with minimal effort.

Saved News & Profile Customization:

The app offers users complete control over their experience — from saving and managing news to customizing preferences.
The Preferences screen lets users refine their chosen news categories anytime, ensuring ongoing personalization.
To enhance readability across different environments, the app supports both light and dark modes.

Takeaway & Learnings:

Balancing rich functionality with minimal, distraction-free design is essential for enhancing the news consumption experience.
Every design decision must directly address real user pain points such as information overload and accessibility challenges.
Visual feedback elements, like smart loading animations, significantly improve perceived performance and user engagement.
Continuous user feedback and iterative design are key to evolving features in line with user expectations.
Accessibility should never be an afterthought — it must be seamlessly integrated from the beginning to ensure inclusivity and wider adoption.
