A Freeform Collaboration
The heart of “Miel de Aguacate” beats to the tune of Bicho Blanco’s song, a narrative about tasting avocado harvested honey. Our collaboration was always about free expression. They gave me the song, a few checkpoints, and the rest was up to my imagination. It was a dance of two artists, unrestricted and unchained.
Crafting Dreamscapes
This wasn’t just about creating characters but about building situations. Imagine lightly sketched characters moving through the haze of a dream, morphing, appearing, and disappearing. They tell tales of metaphysical beliefs, souls, and rituals, blending Mexican deities with other cultural imageries, all woven together with a touch of whimsy.
Unapologetically Raw 2D animation, yes, but it’s the intentional messiness that makes it distinct. Think of it as an artist’s monologue, a little all over the place but deeply expressive. It’s amateurish, and I wear that badge with pride. It sets the tone for the @piojos world
Two Years, Many Versions This journey wasn’t linear. Over two years, scenes were crafted, discarded, revisited. 18 drafts, four versions we thought were “final”, and countless hours of refining later, “Miel de Aguacate” came to life. It’s less about a cohesive story and more about creating a collage of thoughts, leaving you with a lingering curiosity.
Challenges & Triumphs
The technical aspect? A challenge. Two years for a project that seems simple on the surface. But it was a journey of testing, iterating, and learning. And the result? A Best Music Video award at FICIMAD Madrid and nods from four other international festivals. A testament to perseverance and the power of a unique aesthetic.
Self-Gifting an Animated Essay This wasn’t a commissioned project. It was a gift, an exploration I gave myself. It didn’t have an endpoint; it was more about the process. And though it never felt “ready”, it found its deadline. It set the foundation for more self-discoveries and future collaborations, like the one with Fermín Sanchez
