Dirtlej Mobile Application

Designing a Connected Cycling Experience for Performance, Safety, and Adventure

Overview

Dirtlej is a mobile application designed for cycling enthusiasts who want to track their rides, monitor performance, and stay connected with fellow riders. The app combines GPS tracking, ride analytics, location sharing, and real-time communication into a single platform, helping cyclists enjoy safer, more engaging, and data-driven rides.
The objective of this project was to create an intuitive mobile experience that empowers riders to monitor their cycling performance while fostering a connected community through seamless communication and live ride tracking.

The Challenge

Cyclists often rely on multiple apps to track performance, navigate routes, communicate with friends, and ensure safety during rides. Switching between different applications creates unnecessary distractions and interrupts the riding experience.
The challenge was to design an all-in-one cycling companion that simplifies ride tracking, improves rider safety, and enhances community engagement without overwhelming users.

Key Problems

Riders used multiple apps for tracking, navigation, and communication.
Limited real-time visibility of fellow riders during group rides.
Difficulty monitoring performance metrics in a meaningful way.
Safety concerns during long-distance and solo rides.
Ride history and statistics were difficult to analyze.
Existing cycling apps often had complex interfaces with steep learning curves.
Inconsistent user experience across key ride management features.

Project Goals

The application was designed to:
Simplify cycling activity tracking.
Provide real-time ride analytics.
Improve rider safety through live location sharing.
Enable instant communication among cycling groups.
Create a clean and distraction-free mobile experience.
Encourage community engagement.
Deliver a scalable mobile interface for future feature expansion.

Research & Discovery

Research focused on understanding the daily habits and challenges faced by recreational and professional cyclists.
Key research areas included:
Ride tracking behavior
Performance monitoring
Group cycling communication
GPS navigation
Safety features
Fitness statistics
Mobile usability during outdoor activities
The findings helped prioritize features that support both performance-focused riders and casual cycling enthusiasts.

Design Process

1. User Journey Mapping

Mapped the complete cycling experience from planning a ride to reviewing post-ride performance.
Primary user journeys included:
Starting a ride
Live GPS tracking
Monitoring cycling metrics
Sharing live location
Communicating with fellow riders
Viewing ride summaries
Reviewing personal performance history

2. Information Architecture

Organized the application into intuitive modules that support quick access while riding.
Core sections included:
Home Dashboard
Start Ride
Live Tracking
Route Map
Performance Analytics
Ride History
Friends & Groups
Chat
User Profile
Settings
This structure minimized navigation complexity and kept important actions easily accessible.

3. Wireframing

Created low-fidelity wireframes to validate navigation patterns, ride flows, and dashboard layouts before moving into visual design.
Focused on:
Home Dashboard
Ride Tracking Screen
Live Map
Performance Summary
Group Communication
Ride History
User Profile

4. Visual Design

The interface was designed with simplicity, visibility, and ease of use in mind, ensuring riders can access critical information with minimal distraction.
The visual design emphasizes:
Clean layouts
High-contrast UI for outdoor visibility
Large touch targets
Clear typography
Real-time performance indicators
Interactive maps
Consistent navigation
The result is a modern mobile experience optimized for cyclists on the move.
