Project Brief

I collaborated with Bertha’s Kitchen to craft a compelling brand identity that captures the essence of African culinary heritage while appealing to a modern audience. The objective was to develop a distinctive visual system that highlights Bertha’s Kitchen’s authenticity, cultural richness, and culinary expertise, ensuring a strong market presence in Central Pennsylvania.

Phase 1: Creative Direction & Research

1.1 Logo Font Brainstorming
I explored typefaces that balance tradition and modernity, ensuring that the selected typography resonates with Bertha’s Kitchen’s African heritage while maintaining a contemporary and inviting look. The font selection process prioritized readability, warmth, and a handcrafted feel to reflect the authenticity of the brand.
1.2 Logo Concept & Sketching
I sketched various logo concepts that incorporated African visual motifs, including tribal patterns, natural textures, and symbolic elements. The goal was to create a design that instantly communicates Bertha’s Kitchen’s cultural depth while remaining versatile across branding applications.

Phase 2: Logo Design

2.1 Logo Illustration
The finalized logo was crafted to incorporate African-inspired design elements, symbolizing the fusion of heritage and innovation. Bold yet elegant, the logo captures the vibrancy of African cuisine while ensuring adaptability across menus, packaging, and digital platforms.

Phase 3: Visual Design

3.1 Primary Color Palette & Typography
A warm and inviting color palette was developed, inspired by earthy tones, rich spices, and vibrant African textiles. These colors reinforce the brand’s storytelling, evoking a sense of home, tradition, and bold flavors. The typography complements this theme, balancing authenticity with a refined, modern touch.
3.2 Logo Motion Design
To enhance Bertha’s Kitchen’s digital presence, I created a dynamic animated version of the logo. This motion design brings the brand to life, reflecting the energy and vibrancy of the dining experience through smooth transitions and culturally inspired movements.
3.3 Pattern Design
A series of unique African-inspired patterns were developed to support the brand identity, infusing cultural richness into all visual materials. These patterns appear across packaging, promotional materials, and restaurant décor, reinforcing a cohesive brand experience.

Phase 4: Real-Life Branding Application

Social Media
The brand identity was extended to a social media platform that captures the essence of Bertha’s Kitchen. The site’s design seamlessly integrates African cultural elements while providing an intuitive and visually engaging experience for customers looking to explore the menu and place orders.
Brand Design Presentation
To ensure brand consistency across all touchpoints, I developed a comprehensive brand presentation detailing logo usage, color applications, typography guidelines, and pattern integrations. This serves as a reference for future branding efforts, maintaining a strong and unified visual identity.

Phase 5: Client Aftercare

Client Testimonial
Following the successful rollout of the new brand identity, I collected feedback from Bertha’s Kitchen to assess the impact. Their testimonial highlighted how the new visual identity strengthened their presence in the market, resonated with customers, and enhanced their ability to create an immersive African dining experience.
