The National Association of Asian American Professionals (NAAAP) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to cultivating and empowering Asian and Pacific Islander leaders through leadership development, professional networking, and community service. As an organization committed to accessibility, inclusion, and career advancement, their digital presence needed to reflect those values—especially for one of their largest annual events.
We partnered with NAAAP to redesign the website for their annual Leadership Convention, a nationwide gathering of members focused on education, inspiration, and connection. The previous website was outdated, difficult to navigate, and did not meet accessibility standards.
My Role
Led the redesign of the NAAAP Leadership Convention website from strategy to launch. Responsibilities included user journey mapping, accessibility compliance, client communication, design execution in Figma, and final build and testing in WordPress via Elementor.
The Challenge
The original convention site lacked visual hierarchy, accessibility compliance, and a clear user journey which arecrucial issues for a national nonprofit serving a diverse membership base. Additionally, the client requested the use of specific brand colors (lime green, yellow, bright red, and light blue), which posed serious color contrast and accessibility issues.
The Goal
Redesign the event website to ensure users could quickly find event information, explore programs, and register—while remaining WCAG-compliant and aligned with NAAAP's vibrant brand identity.
Solution & Process
We began by auditing the existing site and identifying accessibility red flags and usability pain points. From there, we mapped a user-centered journey focused on two key actions: registering for the event and booking a room. To address the color contrast challenge, we developed a more accessible, monochrome base palette and applied the original brand colors as strategic accents for CTAs and key highlights—preserving brand energy without compromising usability.
Designed high-contrast UI components in Figma.
Built a fully responsive site in WordPress using Elementor.
Integrated a custom Whova event schedule for attendees to explore speakers, create personalized agendas, and build excitement before the event.
Educated the client on accessibility best practices (e.g., type scaling, alt text, screen reader support).
Implemented foundational SEO strategies to improve visibility and search rankings.
A fully WCAG-compliant website that’s visually engaging and easy to navigate.
Streamlined user experience that prioritizes registration and room booking.
Increased time on site and engagement thanks to interactive event features.
Improved client understanding of accessibility and SEO for future web projects.
Successfully launched in time for the Kansas City Leadership Convention.
