Arlo: Redesigning the E-Commerce Experience for AI-Powered Home Security

Project Overview

Client Name: Arlo Technologies (Concept Redesign)
Company: Arlo
Industry: Consumer Electronics / Smart Home IoT / AI SaaS
Objective: To overhaul the digital storefront experience, bridging the gap between high-end tactile hardware purchasing and long-term AI subscription (Arlo Secure) onboarding.

The Challenge

When consumers shop for home security, they are typically in a state of high anxiety or overwhelm. Legacy smart-home websites often fail users due to three core friction points:
Spec-Sheet Fatigue: Customers are bombarded with technical jargon (4K UHD, HDR, dual-band Wi-Fi, FOV) instead of being shown tangible real-world outcomes.
The Ecosystem Maze: Buying a security setup isn't a single purchase; users struggle to understand which doorbells, floodlights, and indoor cameras natively sync together.
The Software Blindspot: Brands treat the mobile app as an afterthought on the marketing site, despite the AI mobile app being the actual product the user will interact with every single day.

The Solution

We structured the Arlo redesign around a high-contrast, tactile e-commerce narrative designed to build confidence and drive bundle conversions:
High-Contrast Hardware Visuals: We leveraged a stark alternating monochrome palette. Deep, shadowy hero banners isolate the matte finishes and optical lenses of the cameras, instantly positioning Arlo as a premium, Apple-grade hardware brand.
Outcome-Focused Interactive Accordions: Instead of endless scrolling, we consolidated the hardware value propositions into a clean 5-step numbered layout (Award-winning design $\rightarrow$ Intelligent alerts). This allows users to self-educate without losing their place on the page.
Putting Software Center-Stage: We dedicated an entire viewport to the "One App to Protect it all" experience, using a clean mobile mockup to showcase the UI of the 24/7 Emergency Response dashboard before the user ever touches a credit card.

Key Technologies & Tools Used

Figma: Design System Architecture, Interactive Accordion Components, Layout Grids, Prototyping
UX Strategy: Hardware-to-SaaS Conversion Mapping, Bundle Upsell Architecture
Visual Treatment: Adobe Photoshop (product isolation, lighting adjustments, and shadow masking)
Target Stack: Next.js (React), Tailwind CSS, Headless Shopify / BigCommerce Commerce Engine.

Results & Impact

Streamlined Path to Purchase: By introducing the “Build Your Bundle & Save” secondary CTA directly below the primary “Add to Cart” button, the design naturally encourages higher Average Order Value (AOV).
Reduced Buyer Hesitation: Prominently integrating a dedicated privacy and data-protection module near the conversion funnel addresses the #1 consumer objection to interior smart cameras.
Modular Storefront Scalability: Created a strict, reusable section-based design system that enables the brand marketing team to effortlessly swap out 3D assets and launch new product lines (like Video Doorbells or Floodlights) using the exact same page architecture.
