Authoring Tool for SCORM E-Learning Courses - StudioDeki

Overview

The StudioDeki Authoring Tool is a custom-built solution for creating eLearning courses compatible with various LMS platforms, including Moodle, SuccessFactor, Saba, Blackboard, and EKP. The primary goal was to develop a scalable, user-friendly system that enabled remote designers and developers to collaborate efficiently while adhering to SCORM standards (1.2, 2004) chosen by clients. The tool was designed to streamline course creation, improve productivity, and establish a consistent design and development workflow. Additionally, it provided insights through LMS-compatible reporting, helping companies optimize their training programs.

Process

Discover (Research & Analysis)

Conducted research with designers and developers to understand their workflows, pain points, and technical requirements.
Analyzed LMS platforms to ensure full compatibility with SCORM standards and diverse reporting capabilities.
Identified the need for a modular system allowing reusable design elements and customizations per client needs.

Define (Framework & Goals)

Established key objectives: scalability, simplicity, and compatibility with diverse LMS systems.
Defined a shared "language" for designers and developers to use while collaborating in an iterative Git-based workflow.
Prioritized user-friendly interaction patterns to enable non-technical users to create personalized courses effortlessly.

Develop (Design & Prototyping)

Designed a robust HTML5-based interface, supported by SaSS and JavaScript for dynamic interactions.
Integrated JSON for defining reusable variables and patterns, ensuring customization across courses.
Created a modular SCORM template system that allowed seamless selection of SCORM versions and dynamic content updates.
Incorporated cross-platform analytics reporting to provide detailed metrics like course completion rates, learner progress, and content improvement areas.

Deliver (Implementation)

Delivered a scalable authoring tool with a structured workflow, enabling collaboration among remote designers and developers.
Created documentation and training materials for users to quickly adapt to the system and maximize productivity.

Challenges

Complexity of SCORM Standards

Ensuring seamless compatibility with multiple LMS platforms required extensive testing and adjustments.

Balancing Technical and Creative Needs

Bridging the gap between designers and developers necessitated a shared design system and straightforward implementation protocols.

Scalability and Maintenance

Designing a tool capable of evolving with future requirements while maintaining ease of use was a critical consideration.

Outcome

Developed a robust SCORM-compatible authoring tool that supported 20 remote users.
Facilitated the creation of over 120 eLearning courses across 24 companies in South America.
Enabled the training and certification of over 25,000 users, enhancing corporate training programs significantly.
Improved productivity through modular design systems, reusable elements, and standardized workflows.

Key Learnings

This project underscored the importance of designing for scalability and collaboration. By integrating modularity, cross-platform compatibility, and a user-centered approach, the StudioDeki Authoring Tool demonstrated how technology can streamline workflows and drive impactful eLearning experiences.
