Resume Builder App | Product Design

Aleyna Çatak

A mobile app where people type their work history and a presentable, exportable resume comes out.

Client: Sertifier
Scope: Product Design + Conversion Design + Storefront Assets + Resume Templates
Timeline: 2022–2023 - in house
My role: Designer for all userflows, the component set, A/B variants, storefront images, and the resume templates themselves

The Problem

The app lived or died on two conversions: a user finishing a resume, and a user paying for the subscription. Both happen on a phone screen, usually in a hurry. The product needed flows that didn't leak users, and a subscription page that could be optimized with evidence instead of opinions.

Constraints

Mobile-first, on both App Store and Google Play — two storefronts, two review pipelines.
Storefront assets needed localization, including for the Indian market.
The final resumes had to export cleanly — a template that breaks in PDF is a bug users see at the worst moment.

The Approach

Decision 1: design the subscription page as a set of A/B variants, not a single "best" page. The alternative was shipping one carefully argued design. Rejected, because conversion is measured, not argued. I designed structured variations so the team could test and keep the winner.
Decision 2: design the resume templates inside HTML/PDF rendering constraints. The alternative was designing templates freely in Figma and letting engineering approximate them in export. Rejected, because the exported file is the actual product — a resume that renders differently than promised is a refund request. The templates were designed to be HTML- and PDF-friendly from the first draft.
Decision 3: a specified component set under a minimal UI. The interface looked simple, which is exactly when inconsistency creeps in unnoticed. Key elements got intricate specs so iterations stayed uniform, and the dev handoff included annotations and edge cases rather than flat screens.

The Range Moment

The resume templates were the spec. Because the person designing them understood what HTML and PDF rendering would and wouldn't tolerate, engineering translated nothing — they implemented. The gap where template designs usually degrade simply wasn't in the pipeline.
