Background

Pigeon is an email desktop application that allows users to efficiently manage and organize their email accounts in one central location. As an entrepreneur, traditional email can be difficult to manage with multiple accounts and a busy calendar. The modern online entrepreneur needs an email client that is fast, efficient and a little less formal. Busy people would rather text than email and the user needs features that automate her emails to help her spend less time on email.

Problem

Traditional email applications are often clunky and don't offer features for the modern online entrepreneur to stay organized and efficient. In the past 6 years, more and more teams are moving away from email and towards team communications platforms like Slack and Discord. Many freelancers are also making the move, but it’s hard to constantly invite new people to a Slack channel for a limited engagement.

Solution

The solution is to develop a digestible email interface that brings together emails from various accounts, presents them in a user-friendly manner and helps users stay organized and productive.

User Research

The research conducted for Pigeon focused on understanding the pain points and needs of the modern online entrepreneur when it comes to managing email.

User Persona

The persona Monica Smith is created to represent the target audience for Pigeon. Monica is an online entrepreneur who manages multiple email accounts and frequently communicates with clients and her team.

Information Architecture

To tackle the challenges faced by modern online entrepreneurs in managing their emails, necessary research was conducted to visualize and understand their patterns and behaviors when it comes to email usage. After conducting extensive research on the pain points and needs of modern online entrepreneurs in email management, we have identified several key features that will enhance users' workflow and improve their email management experience.

Ideation

Developing a product specifically designed to streamline and improve email organization for entrepreneurs. This solution will provide them with an effortless way to find crucial emails using a user-friendly interface. Additionally, the product will offer advanced features including threaded chat, canned responses, and smart filters.

Lo-fi Sketches

The initial design was supposed to have the unopened mail list view to fill the page. There was supposed to be a notifications tab, I decided to take it out because it felt pointless because notifications aren't used to in email as much as other applications. The thread was supposed to look similar to a blog and the canned responses would be a drawer that would fill the space of the message section.

User Testing

Through conducting user interviews I was able to gather feedback from users and identify areas of improvement. I was able to determine specific features users prioritized and how they would like the email desktop application to function.
I conducted tests with five entrepreneurs and business professionals. Based on the results, a majority of users found the app to be user-friendly, while some also appreciated its design and layout. While 40% of respondents reported difficulty in finding or using canned responses, the remaining 60% found it to be manageable. These testing outcomes overall reflected positively on the application.

Retrospective

Pigeon was specifically developed to cater to the needs and challenges faced by today's online entrepreneurs when it comes to managing their emails. Throughout this capstone project, I had the opportunity to express my creativity using minimalist color schemes and typography that enhanced the visual appeal of the app. Additionally, valuable insights were gained during user testing, which helped improve Pigeon in terms of usability and effectiveness. I feel content with the outcome as the feedback I've gotten back from users has been positive, and it's rewarding knowing that people enjoyed going through the experience.
