🤔 Background

DELOS is a science-based aquaculture company that aims to revolutionize the traditional and fragmented aquaculture industry in Indonesia. They offer services that equip aquaculture practitioners with technology and management skills to achieve sustainability and profitable harvests (SaaS Product).
And I had the opportunity to work at Delos for over 2 years and became their first designer. I redesigned their existing platform to make it more professional and streamlined, creating a design system, collaborating with developers/PM's/ Stakeholder, making timelines, and documentation, and eventually becoming the lead designer.
Due to NDA restrictions, I cannot disclose all details about my project.

🎯 Project Goal

To start, I talked with the CPO and Product Manager about their struggle to create a product based on user needs. The takeaway: Redesign the current website to improve usability and give it a fresher, more professional look.
Overview ⬇︎

👩🏽‍💻 Design Process

We split this task into several design iterations, aligning them with design sprints using https://www.atlassian.com. The timeline to redesign the website with a fresher look is 2 weeks, not including some feature improvements/additions.
Since I didn't have much time for exploration, I took the initiative to do a bit of research to find similar designs and current UI trends. I translated this into a cleaner, more minimalist visual style while still considering the needs of users and stakeholders.
When the design sprint was finished, I was able to complete the first iteration.
1st Iteration ⬇︎
Completing the first design iteration took about 4 months because I had to redesign and create new designs for some pages that didn't exist before (login & register page, profile, and some old features and new feature additions).
After 4 months, I got 2 designers, 2 researchers, and 1 writer to join the team.
Additional:
During this process, I was allowed to visit the shrimp farms to see the breeding process firsthand. I also interviewed some workers there to understand the process and specific terms used in shrimp farming. This helped me create a product that meets user needs and gave me ideas for future design and feature improvements.
2nd Iteration ⬇︎
The next stage was to improve the design and add new features. We focused on completing the design system, which I hadn't fully finished in the first stage due to limited resources and a tight timeline.
An interesting new task was the request to create a mobile app. So, my team and I divided the work among the website, mobile app, and design system.
App Design ⬇︎
The process of creating the mobile app involved help from the research team because we needed to look at similar apps from competitors. This allowed us to identify their strengths and weaknesses, which helped us improve our features and create a visual design that stands out compared to the competition.
3rd Iteration ⬇︎
Day by day, we kept updating the design based on the research results from the researcher team. Sometimes, we also interviewed some users to understand their perspectives. Discussions with the developer team became more intense as we added more complex new features. All discussions were conducted online since I was working from home, and throughout this process, there were no issues with task delivery or leading the design team.

🔥 Final Design

After several iterations and feedback from user testing, I delivered a streamlined and more user-friendly design.

🥰 Overview of my contributions

Objective:
Redesign the current website to improve usability and give it a fresher, more professional look.
Key Actions:
Conduct user research to identify pain points.
Develop and test design iterations for enhanced user experience.
Implement a modern, professional visual design.
Ensure responsive and accessible design across devices.
Success Metrics:
Increased user satisfaction and engagement.
Improved website performance and accessibility.
Higher conversion rates and user retention.
Implementation
Collaborated with Engineering and PM on technical feasibility, implementation through design QA.

🎁 Takeaways

This was my first experience working as the first designer at a company, where I had full responsibility for setting the design guidelines from brainstorming to user-ready. I collaborated not only within the internal team (CPO, PM, Designers, Researchers, Writer) but also with other divisions (Developers, science team, stakeholders). Leading the team was interesting since I was used to working individually without a team, and everything was done online successfully.
