Introduction

During my tenure as a Product Designer at Mvmnt, I embarked on a transformative journey, leveraging cutting-edge technology to redefine the home workout experience. Collaborating remotely with a dynamic, cross-functional team, we partnered with Sky TV to create an avant-garde machine learning and artificial intelligence workout application. This case study delves into the core aspects of my contributions, focusing on collaborative design, innovation, multi-platform expertise, user experience, and product development.

Collaborative Design

My role at Mvmnt was deeply rooted in collaborative design. Engaging closely with designers, developers, and stakeholders, we envisioned a workout app that was not only technologically advanced but also user-centric. Our goal was to utilise innovative camera technology, provided by Sky TV, to enhance user safety and engagement. This collaborative effort was pivotal in gamifying exercise routines and minimising risks during home workouts, ensuring an enjoyable and secure environment for users.

Innovation in Technology

A cornerstone of our project was the integration of innovative camera technology. This technology enabled us to track workouts accurately, ensuring users' safety by monitoring their form and performance. We pushed the boundaries of engagement by gamifying exercise routines, thereby enhancing user motivation and participation. This technological innovation was critical in transforming mundane home workouts into exciting and dynamic experiences.

Multi-Platform Expertise

My contributions to Mvmnt showcased versatility across various platforms, including mobile, TV, and smartwatches. We aimed for seamless user experiences, ensuring consistency and accessibility regardless of the device. This approach was essential in maintaining user engagement and satisfaction, providing them with the flexibility to switch between devices without compromising on their workout experience.

User Experience Focus

A significant part of my role involved guiding the videography of workout routines. This was crucial in enhancing the user experience, as clear, motivating, and easy-to-follow videos are fundamental to a successful workout app. My efforts ensured that users felt supported and motivated throughout their fitness journey, contributing to the app's overall success.

Product Development

I played a pivotal role in the product's lifecycle, from its conceptualisation to launch. My focus on functionality, aesthetics, and user engagement was instrumental in meeting the high standards set for the product. The development process was iterative, incorporating user feedback to refine and improve the app continuously.

Addressing User Feedback

Based on user feedback, we identified that exercises requiring users to focus on the TV, such as planks, posed a challenge. To address this, we developed mobile and watch apps to accompany the TV app, facilitating real-time data sharing. This innovation allowed users to track their progress more conveniently, enhancing the overall workout experience.

Smartwatch Integration and Heart Rate Zone Feature

Recognising the demand for smartwatch integration, we expanded our app's capabilities to include fitness tracker data. This enabled users to monitor their reps and timers directly from their wrist. Furthermore, we introduced a 'heart rate zone' feature on the TV app, allowing users to optimise their rest periods and track calories burned, significantly enhancing the user's ability to monitor their fitness progress.

User Testing and Feedback

Our development process was underpinned by rigorous user testing, conducted at Sky TV's labs. We engaged new users to eliminate bias and revisited previous users to gauge improvements. This iterative testing and feedback loop were invaluable, leading to the successful launch of the mobile app, and subsequently, the watch app. User responses were overwhelmingly positive, highlighting the intelligent experience facilitated by the seamless integration between the TV, mobile, and watch apps.

Reviews from Publications

In enhancing the case study of my contributions to the Mvmnt app at Sky Live on Sky Glass, incorporating feedback from esteemed publications provides a comprehensive view of the app's market reception, highlighting its achievements and areas for development.

Women's Health

Women's Health praised the app for making exercise appealing again with its 6-minute workouts and forthcoming features like personalised programmes, heart-rate zone matching, and smartwatch integration. However, they pointed out the substantial investment required for the Sky Glass TV and Sky Live camera, starting at £20 a month, as a significant drawback, despite acknowledging the app's potential. Read the full review here.

The Coach review appreciated the app's convenience as a pre-installed feature on Sky Glass and its functionality in tracking reps and providing personalised form-correction cues. Nevertheless, the absence of a group exercise atmosphere and the dependency on Sky Glass TV were considered limitations. Issues with technical aspects and a lack of heart rate and calorie tracking were also highlighted. TechRadar

TechRadar commented on the ease of setting up the Live camera and the companion phone app, while also pointing out the significant investment required for the Sky Glass TV and Live camera. The inclusion of the app without an extra charge was seen positively, but the high cost of the necessary hardware was considered a major factor to consider. However, the concerns about the cost of essential hardware and some functional limitations provide critical insights for future developments, stressing the importance of balancing technological advancements with user accessibility and preferences.

My journey at Mvmnt was a testament to the power of innovative technology, collaborative design, and user-centred development in creating a revolutionary home workout experience. By addressing user needs and leveraging the latest in AI and machine learning, we were able to deliver a product that not only met but exceeded user expectations. This case study encapsulates the essence of our endeavour – to transform home workouts into a comprehensive, engaging, and highly personalised fitness journey.
