Hamish Brewer is a man with a hunger to enhance the way education is delivered to upcoming generations. His introduction surprised me. Even with the straightforward title of the video, I, unfortunately, assumed the video would present a polished, formal, elderly man that prides himself on being well-spoken, and by the book, I’m glad I was wrong! Although Mr. Brewer displays both an adaptive and learning agile leadership style, he is a charismatic leader. Brewer is transforming a problem he quickly acknowledged, for the better of the community.

Adaptive leadership refers to leaders that can adjust to wavering events. This is a unique trait that not many have—adapting to changing situations grants leaders the ability to resolve problems quickly and efficiently while accommodating their followers. The school system will always face arising issues that were not present the year before. “Times changed. Kids have changed. How far are you willing to go for a child?”, this statement represents Brewer’s ability to confront any challenge for the sake of his students.

Learning agility is an approach that allows leaders the opportunity to use prior knowledge from experiences when facing new challenges. Wisdom comes from an extended amount of time dedicated to a certain thing. This capability is represented in Brewer’s experience as a student himself. He quickly realized that he did not fit into the traditional education system, so he was urged to change it.

Principal Brewer is a charismatic leader as he moves forward with passion, resisting the traditional ways of education to revolutionize the experience provided. Brewer also showcases the typical characteristics of a charismatic leader in terms of his vision, rhetorical skills, image, and personalized leadership style (pg. 604). His vision consists of improving the education provided to low-income children with minimal resources. He can make this vision realistic by using his own experiences and energy. His rhetoric involves him being open, honest, compassionate, and gracious. This level of communication creates a safe environment for children to flourish. Mr. Brewer can speak to children as more than their superior, but as an individual who cares about their well-being. This leads to the next trait, image, and trust-building. This Principal has a style that has brought him great success in academics and with the well fair of students, why shouldn’t he be able to accomplish similar goals at Fred Lynn? More than a staff member, Hamish is a man who loves the children he serves. His original leadership style stems from being “one of these kids who knows what it’s like to come from a separated family” and he refuses to “make the same mistakes” he endured (2017).

Hamish Brewer is a remarkable individual choosing to be a significant figure in the lives of many kids. His leadership style will assist the growth and proper development of students in every community he is a member of. Everyone needs to have a Mr. Brewer in their lives, someone who has experienced something unfortunate and wishes to make it better for everyone else that follows.
