The client

Zellis is the Market Leader in HR and Payroll software solutions supplying 7 out of 10 UK retailers and is responsible for software that pays nearing 5 million employees every month. Their focus is on delivering successful partnerships with customers, helping deliver successful business outcomes, providing modern and intuitive digital experiences, and – most importantly – making every employee feel appreciated for the work they do.

The problem

Their existing solution on how people view their pay was very outdated. It consisted of logging in to the application accessed via a URL, selecting the exact date of payslip they want, and viewing an embedded PDF containing the pay data. The user experience was very disjointed and made it hard for users to access multiple payslips in an easy manner.

The solution

I was the design lead on the project, which involved working closely with the product manager. As this was a new product I had to work with the product manager to gain valuable insights and customer feedback, to help shape the product requirements and a key features list for an MVP.
With the current journey being disjointed with next to no features, the intention was to modernise how people view their payslips and improve the user experience so that the information can be accessed in a more exciting and stimulating manner.
Based on the requirements and features that we’re requested by customers I drew up some initial sketches to get an understanding of how everything could work together and get a general layout.
This was then moved into a low-fi wireframe to get a better feel for how components could work on screen and at different device sizes. Having the ability to rapidly prototype allowed me to present ideas to the project team and other key stakeholders to get feedback. After getting the initial sign-off on low-fi wireframes, I was able to start adding some data and create more high fidelity prototypes and test with users to see where the pain point in the product was.
There were a few takeaways that were taken into consideration from the wireframes, and this was then reflected in the design phase. This involved working with the existing company branding to create an accessible interface for all users on all devices.
MyPay now provides multiple payslip breakdowns and visualisations, allowing employees to check, plan, and compare while reducing the number of payroll queries received by HR.
