1000 Young Voices Report

Joshua Bell

Overview 🔎
As a research consultant and member of the project management team on the 1,000 Young Voices Survey, I worked with the National Education Collaboration Trust (NECT), Old Mutual, and the Congress of South African Students (COSAS) to conduct a nationwide study on the experiences, perceptions, and aspirations of Grade 9 and Grade 11 learners. This initiative aimed to provide data-driven insights to inform tailored programs that address learners’ needs and track their progress over time.
Project Details 🤝
The survey employed a mixed-methods approach, combining literature reviews, focus group interviews, and surveys distributed across all nine provinces. Key objectives included:
• Assessing Learner Perceptions: Understanding students’ views on teaching quality, school resources, and the overall learning environment.
• Evaluating Mental Health & Support Systems: Identifying mental health challenges and the accessibility of psychosocial support at school and home.
• Understanding School Leadership: Exploring students’ opinions on the effectiveness and approachability of school principals and administrators.
• Exploring Future Aspirations: Gauging learners’ optimism about post-graduation opportunities and their recommendations for better youth support systems.
Key findings included:
• Mental Health Concerns: Many learners reported struggles with academic pressure, socio-economic challenges, and limited access to mental health resources.
• Importance of Leadership: Schools with engaged and empathetic leadership saw higher levels of student satisfaction.
• Future Aspirations & Career Guidance: While optimism about the future remained strong, many learners expressed concerns about post-graduation opportunities, highlighting the need for improved career guidance and exposure to career paths.
Results ✨
The survey provided valuable data to guide interventions in mental health support, school leadership, and career preparedness. The insights gained will serve as a foundation for future programs designed to enhance students’ academic success and personal well-being.
Conclusion đź’Ą
The 1,000 Young Voices Survey reaffirmed the importance of learner-centred policies and targeted interventions. By addressing key challenges in mental health, leadership, and career readiness, the findings contribute to shaping a more supportive and effective educational landscape in South Africa.
