Overview 🔎
My work on the Teacher Pedagogy Project spanned multiple roles, beginning as a Research Trainee at the National Education Collaboration Trust (NECT) and later transitioning to Research Impact Officer. This work focused on strengthening classroom research and teacher pedagogy in South Africa, bridging the efforts of the NECT with the Teacher Training for Equitable and Quality Learning (TTTEQL) Research Consortium. I later continued this work as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Centre for International Teacher Education (CITE), under the leadership of Professor Yusuf Sayed (University of Cambridge).
Project Details 🤝
Throughout my involvement, I contributed in three core areas:
Research Development and Strategy
• Conducted a literature scan across seven countries, producing a literature survey document.
• Drafted a Call for Expressions of Interest, circulated to 79 experts.
• Developed a research proposal and concept note.
• Analysed and compiled 26 international classroom observation instruments.
2. Project Coordination and Implementation
• Played a strategic role in aligning the NECT’s work with the TTTEQL consortium.
• Revised and refined the activity plan, ensuring clear outputs, roles, and responsibilities.
• Reworked the research budget to align with project phases and resource needs.
3. Data Management, Reporting, and Administration (Postdoctoral Role at CITE)
• Managed data from 907 teacher surveys, 284 teacher observations, 142 teacher interviews, 39 school leader interviews, 152 learner book reviews, and 39 SGB interviews.
• Contributed to the TTTEQL proposal, Western Cape provincial report, launch presentation, and national report.
• Provided project management support, including consortium communication, financial processing, and deliverable tracking.
Results
The project culminated in the finalisation of the TTTEQL proposal and budget, the Western Cape provincial report, the launch of the Teacher Pedagogy Programme, and the TPS national report. These outputs contributed to shaping South Africa’s teacher education landscape, providing key insights for policymakers and educators.
Conclusion 💥
The Teacher Pedagogy Project reinforced the need for rigorous classroom research and collaboration between researchers, policymakers, and educators. My contributions helped bridge strategic gaps, ensuring that research findings informed practical interventions to enhance teacher training and pedagogy in South Africa.
