introduction

Nigeria is one of the leading countries in Africa for cryptocurrency adoption. In 2022, the country accounted for over 20% of all cryptocurrency transactions in Africa. Busha, on the other hand, is one of the most used crypto exchange platforms in the country. Operating in Nigeria and Kenya, Busha boasts of a larger number of daily users compared to other platforms in Africa. The main reason Busha is preferred to other exchanges is because of how easy and fast it is to complete transactions on the platform, and payment links are here to make it even faster.

my role

I led the design of the product from start to finish and also contributed to its user testing. I collaborated with the lead product manager (Salome), who handled user stories, interviews and developer hand-offs throughout the entire project.

problem

Through series of interviews with our daily users, we were able to pinpoint a major problem with with how transactions are made on the platform. We found out that for most of our users that are Business owners, it was a hassle whenever they try to receive payments from their customers that are not active users of the platform.
We needed to provide a way to cater for payments into the platform from users who are not active users of the Busha platform.

goal

Increase customer retention rates for our Users
We needed to make the process our making payments as easy and short and possible.
Drive Businesses to Busha
To attract potential Business owners to the platform due to how easy it is to be paid.
Increase web app usage
Most people are not comfortable making transactions on web apps as they feel that mobile apps are safer. Currently, 96% of our total usage comes from the mobile app. This reduces a significant amount of total usage on the platform daily, especially as we have other products that are entirely web based. By introducing a web based payment link from a platform they trust, we hope to gradually build the trust on web apps.

impact

For confidential reasons, I won't be sharing actual metrics here.
In just 4 weeks of going live, we saw a significant increase in user retention on the platform as it became super easy to do things that were usually abandoned halfway before.
We also saw a spike in our web app usage. Although this meant a decrease in our mobile app usage, we recorded a higher transaction volume in this period of time.

early ideation

The design kicked off with another designer handling the early stages before I was asked to take lead. We went through a lot of stages where we tested our early iterations internally and with a few of our beta testers. We were able to gather feedback based on the tests and made
We used miro nd Figma as our collaboration tools
After several testing we had a clear path as to what we'd like the design to look like. The image below shows what a user sees when the click on a payment link. We've come a long way from the first screenshots as the coloured headers were distracting and really not useful.
Upon further user testing sessions, we removed the timeline as it was not making the impact we thought it would. The final iteration that was shipped to the end users looks like this. The end product was made to be really short as we were able to eliminate some unnecessary steps thanks to testing. At the end, users only have to click four times to perform a transaction.

future steps

Addition of fiat payments : We want our users to be an able to make Fiat payments through payment links as well. This is currently in the works and still being tested.
Increase web app adoption: Although we saw a significant adoption of our web app, we'd love to increase the number by a wider margin in the nearest future.
You can use the product here. Thank you for reading through! Hope you enjoyed learning about my design and thought process. :)
