Compoundly, a FinTech startup set on transforming the approach to retirement savings, aimed to spotlight the stealthy drain of hidden investment fees on long-term financial growth. Yet, their ambitious goal presented significant hurdles due to the complex and opaque nature of financial fee structures. The startup, driven to empower investors by unveiling these often-overlooked fees, needed a video sales letter (VSL) that could distill intricate financial jargon into a compelling narrative that resonates with their audience.
The project demanded a nuanced understanding of financial regulations and the ways fees are woven into investment strategies, challenges that required extensive research and a creative translation of complex concepts into accessible language. Tasked with scripting this VSL, I explored the subject and drew out the key impacts of hidden fees on an investors' futures. My script aimed to pull back the curtain on the secretive practices of financial institutions, framing Compoundly not just as a service but as a vital tool for financial empowerment.
To make the video as engaging as possible, I focused heavily on the ultimate goal of investment: to secure a financially secure future and a happy retirement. I used this powerful emotional and psychological hook to get attention in the all-important first few seconds - all with a simple curiosity trick.
The production of the VSL, while outside my direct involvement, was guided by the narrative I created. This narrative was designed to engage viewers with a stark visualization of how much of their retirement could be silently siphoned away by fees, using comparisons and real-life scenarios to drive the message home. This approach educated the audience and stirred them towards action, underscoring Compoundly’s mission to fix this problem.
The feedback from Compoundly was overwhelmingly positive, thanks to the clarity and effectiveness of the VSL script in communicating a complex issue in an engaging manner. While the long-term efficacy of the campaign in terms of user acquisition and platform engagement remains less certain due to broader market dynamics, the immediate reception highlighted the script’s success in achieving its educational goals.
This project highlighted the importance of clear communications for financial services and the need to break down complex subjects into easy-to-digest information for consumers. It was also an opportunity that gave me invaluable insights into how modern-day FinTechs work with the latest technology to solve the many issues present in the modern-day finance sector.
