MURAL
I joined Mural at the inception of the MuralXR project, aimed at creating an immersive application for Meta Quest Devices. Initially tasked with transforming traditional LUMA Methods into engaging, gamified experiences within Horizon Worlds, I used this opportunity to gain deep insights into customer expectations and requirements for VR products from Mural.
Over the following two years, I continued as Lead Environmental Designer and Design Technologist, a part of Mural's Ventures and Labs department, focusing on further developing and testing the MuralXR application with real users. This ongoing effort allowed us to refine the application based on user feedback, ensuring it met the highest standards of functionality and user experience in virtual collaboration tools.

Achievements and Impact:

Helped secure a multi-million-dollar Meta for Business grant by completing Meta Milestones in design and development.
Transformed LUMA Methods into gamified versions within Horizon Worlds, increasing interest in Mural products in VR by introducing current Mural Enterprise clients to potential new features.
Created a comprehensive 3D environment in Gravity Sketch from conception to final product, facilitating seamless integration of the map into the application for Unity development team.
Successfully achieved performance milestones by optimizing the final environment, reducing polygon count from 800K to 350K, resulting in significant improvements meeting the required milestone of 72FPS from 25FPS.
Designed and prototyped multi-player activities and collaboration games, ensuring seamless integration and enhancing product-market fit through rigorous UXR playtests.
Created UX flows, wireframes, and journey maps for activities/games and the new user tutorial, resulting in a direct impact on increased development speed for UI and enhanced collaboration with developers.
Streamlined design workflows in Mural, Notion, and meetings, resulting in the completion of more objectives during sprints and significantly enhancing overall design team productivity and organization.
Engaged with enterprise customers from diverse industries (financial services, software & technology, automotive, consulting) through collaborative Game Jam Events (Mural Fall Festival) and UXR/Beta playtesting, gathering actionable insights to refine product offerings, implement new feature requests, and document bugs.
Contributed to a small, remote-based team spanning multiple time zones and diverse native languages, overcoming communication challenges to foster innovation, collaboration, and achieve project milestones effectively.

Mural Fall Festival: Testing VR Worlds Based on LUMA Methods

At Mural, I spearheaded the design and prototyping efforts during the Mural Fall Festival, a pivotal initiative where we created 16 immersive worlds in Horizon Worlds. Each world was meticulously crafted to embody different LUMA methods, providing enterprise clients with tangible experiences to explore and evaluate potential applications of VR in their teams. This initiative aimed to deeply understand the specific needs and preferences of users within a virtual environment, laying a solid foundation for future application development.
Designed and developed 16 themed worlds in Horizon Worlds.
Each world was tailored to showcase different LUMA methods.
Goal was to gather insights and feedback on user preferences and needs in VR.

Building the Native Application's Environment

Following the success of the Mural Fall Festival, I transitioned to lead the design and development of Mural's native application environment. Utilizing insights gathered from user testing and feedback, I conceptualized and prototyped a comprehensive 3D environment that served as the core interface for the MuralXR App. This environment not only integrated the gamified elements and interactive features essential for virtual collaboration but also ensured seamless navigation and intuitive user experience across different VR devices.

UX Design Contributions at Mural

New User Experience Design

Within a small, collaborative team at Mural, I took a proactive role in designing the new user experience for the MuralXR App. My focus was on creating a seamless and intuitive onboarding process that enabled users to quickly acclimate to VR controls and navigate Mural’s interface with ease. This involved:
User Onboarding: Developing straightforward onboarding flows to introduce users to essential VR functionalities and Mural’s interface.
Navigation Optimization: Simplifying navigation paths and designing clear UI elements to enhance user understanding and interaction.
Interactive Learning Tools: Implementing interactive tutorials and tooltips to guide users in discovering and utilizing app features effectively.

Activity Design and User Journeys

I played a crucial role in designing activities and mapping user journeys within Mural, aiming to improve user engagement and workflow efficiency. This included:
Activity Flow Design: Breaking down complex workflows into manageable steps, focusing on usability and optimizing task completion.
Journey Mapping: Charting user journeys to identify key touchpoints and ensure seamless interaction throughout the VR experience.
Iterative Improvement: Incorporating user feedback into ongoing design iterations to refine UX elements and enhance overall user satisfaction.
