It's exciting seeing new designers emerging and releasing new collections, specifically Black designers who have constantly proved to be the fashion blueprint for years. This upcoming Black streetwear designer has created unique, environmentally conscious collections featuring one of a kind pieces, and should definitely be on your radar.
Heron Preston
Fashion designer, creative director and DJ Heron Preston debuted his brand Heron Preston in 2017 titled "For you, the world." Preston began his fashion career by collaborating with music artist Kanye West where he then became his art director. From that, Preston began making connections which led him to Matthew Williams and the late Virgil Abloh, making them the dynamic trio behind the hype streetwear brand "Been Trill."
Once that era ended, the three ventured off to pursue their own passions. Preston's love for technology and sustainability sparked the influence to create his brand. He then made it his mission to focus on helping the planet.
Preston began identifying ways to create more sustainable fashion and teamed up with the Department of Sanitation in 2016. This collaboration birthed the Heron Preston x DSNY - Uniform Collection, a line made completely from recycled and reused fabric. Inspired by the employees work-wear uniforms, this avant-garde collab showcased not only cool, archive pieces, but also items that were unable to decompose in landfills.
Overall, this brand is one to keep your eye out for. Although the brand is not 100% sustainable, Preston states that moving forward, this is something that he is working on.
“I don’t have all the answers—I’m kind of learning as I’m going,” he says. “And if I can share what I’ve picked up, that’s a plus.”
