Margin & Matter: Editorial Platform & WordPress Theme

Margin & Matter is an independently designed and built Noerong project for writers, creative publications and small editorial teams. I developed the public reading experience and the private publishing workflow together, then created a separate native WordPress theme for buyers who prefer familiar content tools.

A beautiful homepage is only the beginning. A publication also needs readable articles, useful ways to discover stories, and a clear path from unfinished draft to published work. The goal was to make those parts feel like one considered product.

The visual direction takes its rhythm from print: expressive serif headlines, restrained blue accents, editorial margins and a consistent hierarchy for category, title and metadata. Photography keeps its full composition. Motion introduces stories without taking control away from the reader: manual navigation, pause behavior and reduced-motion fallbacks are built in.

A protected author studio for structured blocks, drafts, private preview, revisions, scheduled visibility and archive/restore.

Image upload, publication settings and JSON export, with editor authorization kept separate from public reading.

The application now runs on Railway using React, Next.js and TypeScript, persistent SQLite storage and a private upload volume. Independent editor login uses scrypt password hashes, revocable database sessions and same-origin write checks.

This is a genuinely native block theme, not the application repackaged under another name. It provides editable templates and header/footer parts, three style palettes, three editorial patterns, article layouts, search, archives, reading-size controls and a featured-story carousel. WordPress itself manages posts, media, revisions, scheduling and users. No paid page builder is required.

The current Railway application passed 15 model/API tests. The native WordPress theme was checked in a fresh WordPress 7.1 / PHP 8.3 preview, including article navigation and native search. Both ZIP layers passed integrity checks, and the installable theme includes its GPL licence. These are implementation checks, not audience-growth results.

The WordPress package includes an installable theme ZIP, GPL licence, setup guide, credits and four optional draft example stories. It does not include the custom application studio. Hosting, domains, newsletters, memberships, AI writing, migration and ongoing maintenance are outside the theme download.

A live editorial application and a separately installable WordPress edition, each with an explicit purpose and implementation boundary. This is independent product work, not a commissioned client case study; no audience-growth or revenue results are claimed.

Current production deployment: the live application now runs independently on Railway with persistent SQLite storage, a private mounted upload volume and an editor-only session system. The downloadable WordPress theme remains a separate self-hosted product.
