Summary

I designed and co-founded Silboo (www.silboo.com), an AI-powered platform to search events in your city!
It is now available in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and Salerno where we saw there was a problem in finding and sharing events, especially if you’re not a local.
I co-founded Silboo while I was staying in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, a hub for digital nomads from all over the world. We noticed that both digital nomads and locals struggle to find events in the island because there isn’t a proper platform and events are usually scattered through various Facebook pages, Instagram, venues websites and other online platforms.

The Idea

We decided to build a platform powered by AI which can scan all of these event sources to gather them all in one single page and suggest them to you based on your interests.
The idea came up mainly because we noticed how people who live in such a paradise still struggle to go out and find events, hobbies and true connections. This means they often rely on online entertainment. We want to change that and encourage people to enjoy life and connections outside of your phone.

Research

We gathered a few people and conducted interviews over the course of several weeks to establish what was the best approach to build the platform. We didn’t want to be biased towards digital nomads or locals.
These are some of the most important findings:
where do you find events?
Instagram
Facebook
Venue's website
What bothers you the most about event searching?
Not tailored
Need to look and follow multiple pages
Events not translated
No price transparency
No event source, no location, missing information

Competitors Analysis

We soon realised that competitors are really not interested in small-medium sized cities. Most of the venues need to advertise on their own channels which included different Facebook and Instagram pages or their own websites.

Wireframes

I started building a user journey and wireframes which was as simple as possible for our MVP. People needed to only do the essential for now:
Browse different events in the area
Filter the events
Being able to see all information in one place such as price, venue, location, description and original link to the event
Share the event

User Testing

We tested a first iteration of our wireframes with a group of users and gathered these insights:
Would be nice to have the most important (biggest) events on top
Include a map of the location

High Fidelity Prototypes

I designed the high fidelity prototype for both mobile, laptop and desktop breakpoints using Figma, created a design system as well as branding.
The design uses a clean, familiar and easy to navigate user interface. This is because the events artworks will be the main protagonists. The events need to display all relevant information that users would like to see at a glance when browsing (Name, Location, Price, date and time) without being too overwhelming.

Events complexity

The main challenge was the organisation of the events. An organiser could hold the same event in different locations and events could last several days and have various locations across the city.
The solution was to design a very simple and flexible way to display an event so that all the elements (such as location, organiser, price etc) are easily changeable.
Additionally, the website source of the event is always displayed for full transparency.

Final Thoughts

Silboo is just at the beginning but we already registered a lot of interest and users. We will soon add many more cities and already started looking for fundings. Next steps will include the realisation of an app with increased AI integrations.
