Happiness House has been a long term project where I was the only UX/UI Designer, working directly with the CEO, the Project Manager and Developers. The platform needed some new features to be added and a complete UI update throughout.
The client
Happiness House is a German social media platform focussed on mental health and wellbeing. Users can post and share updates on their feed and have access to various classes, meet-ups and events.
Objectives
The client already conducted UX Research with an external agency and provided all the material and feedback to build the new features. They also had some guidelines for their new UI, however I was free to make suggestions and improvements.
Feature-heavy platform
The social media platform is divided into different sections, packed with features such as chats, meet-ups, live events, courses etc.
The solution was to concentrate on the information architecture and conduct research and user testing to better understand how to navigate the sections and features in an easier way.
Content Internationalisation
The social media platform is available in German and English. However, not only the content is translated from one language to another, some changes in the UI had to be made as well.
The platform focusses on inclusivity, and adjustments had to be made to components such as dropdowns and multiple selections to deliver a gender neutral tone of voice.
Additionally, German composite words could result in longer CTAs which needed to be adapted.
Challenges
Among the many new features and UI updates, these were the most challenging ones:
Diary
Community Page
Diary
Users love using the platform diary as their daily journal as well as to track their tasks (e.g. meditate, drinking water etc). The challenge was to redesign the diary making it easy to manage both these aspects.
The redesigned diary is divided in two sections. On the left panel the user can log and create their “rituals”, a series of tasks and habits which are kept throughout the days.
On the right panel the user can fill out their diary with a fresh new page every day. Users can also choose to divide their diary into sections with different prompts and create their own layouts by dragging and dropping them.
Community Page
The new community page lets you explore new users who you might know based on activities and interests you have in common. People can be suggested depending on similar groups, friendships in common, similar interests and similar courses/activities.
I designed the page focusing the attention to the users (e.g. their profile photo, background photo and name) while keeping the “reason you may know them” in the same card. Finally, a “say hello” button lets you get in touch with them easily by opening the chat.
Final Thoughts
Happiness House has been one of my biggest projects and definitely among the ones I am most proud of. I really enjoyed tackling the challenges of a features-rich platform, ensuring the best usability.
