📊 EmpowerRD - UK Finance Start Up

EmpowerRD has been a long term project where I was the only designer, working directly with the Project Manager and Development Team. The platform needed a few new features to be added as well as a refreshed UI.

EmpowerRD is a London based company in the financial sector focussed on R&D claims. Although their product is highly technical, the UI is simple and clean, making it easier to go through complex data and documentation.

The client wanted to include a couple of new features in their existing dashboard as well as a complete UI redesign. They conducted a series of interviews among their own users as well as internal colleagues (the platform is used internally as well). I received general guidelines regarding the features to implement, however I had freedom of exploring different solutions.

The redesign of the platform has been really interesting, since it involved displaying a lot of data and information without overwhelming the user. Because it is a B2B platform, the dashboard needed to be quite technical but easy to use at the same time.

There were two main challenges while integrating new features:

Integrating Feedback

Tracking Claim Progression

Users need to receive feedback and adjust their answers, however it could be difficult when their paperwork is divided into different sections and pages involving both text, numbers and tables.

The solution included:

Highlighted sections which contain feedback that need to be resolved. This helped users understand which section they should focus on when reviewing their claim.

Summary of the feedback provided on the right panel. Users can see how many comments they received and can jump into the desired section to make changes. The side panel is fixed to allow users to move through the documents easily.

Feedback popups for tables. When users need to focus on specific cells rather than the whole table, they can see feedback popups for those exact cells and values.

Claims have a lot of different documents attached to them. Some might be easy to fill out, while others require weeks, which means not all sections have the same weight.

The process of submitting a claim is quite long since different sections and paperwork need to be filled.

The user needs to be able to navigate different sections of their application as well as track the progress for each one of them.

The solution included:

A sidebar with collapsable elements to jump straight to the correct section.

Status icons indicating if a section is complete or needs to be completed.

“Next Steps” widget which lets the user jump into their claim right where they left off.

“Claim Progression” widget which gives the user a progression status of their overall claim as well as the individual components.

EmpowerRD has been such a great project to work on. I enjoyed the challenge of creating a B2B product which includes many features and complex data, while maintaining a simple and user-friendly design.
