Overview

Furex is a multi-feature crypto and fiat management app for users across Africa. It helps people buy, sell, and swap crypto to fiat, manage wallets, pay bills, and use virtual cards. The product began with 7 crypto assets and Naira.

The challenge

As the feature set grew, the product was built on a foundation designed for a smaller, simpler app. Three connected issues emerged:
Users struggled to understand core actions and support tickets showed drop-off during a slow, opaque onboarding and KYC process.
Users with visual impairments or light sensitivity were asking for a light mode, which the app did not support.
Inconsistent, heavy transaction flows created design debt and slowed engineering as the business expanded into more African countries, currencies, and features.

Design approach

I treated these as one systems problem rather than separate screen-level fixes. The aim was to reduce friction at signup, make the experience accessible, and create a UI foundation that could scale without country-specific versions or feature-by-feature patching.

What I did

Audited critical user journeys and friction points across the app.
Re-architected onboarding so signup required only phone or email verification, a transaction PIN, and biometrics. Full KYC moved to the point of an actual transaction, allowing users to explore first while working within the third-party verification constraint.
Designed a currency selector with localized formatting that could adapt to users across countries and currencies.
Designed a full light-mode theme to address the accessibility need directly.
Introduced a consistent design system and component library across features.
Simplified visual hierarchy in transaction flows to support speed and trust.
Worked closely with engineers to keep the designs feasible to build.

My role

Product Design, UX Design, and UI Design.

Internal estimates after launch

25–30% reduction in onboarding drop-off.
18–22% increase in completed transactions.
About 30% faster task completion for buy, sell, and swap flows.
Reduced UI rework during development through clearer, reusable design-system patterns.
Improved confidence during first-time transactions and better accessibility for users with visual impairments or light sensitivity.

Tools

Figma, Google Apps, and Slack.
