STUTTAFORDS 2026 — A RESURRECTION, NOT A REDESIGN
STUTTAFORDS 2026 is a self-initiated speculative brand concept exploring what one of South Africa’s most iconic department stores could feel like if it returned today.
Rather than approaching the project as a nostalgic redesign, I imagined STUTTAFORDS as though it had never disappeared; evolving into a contemporary luxury retail institution shaped by fashion, beauty, culture and exceptional curation.
The question became less about what STUTTAFORDS was and more about what it could make someone feel in 2026.
The visual world is rooted in Cape Town: pale stone architecture, hard coastal sunlight, palms, deep botanical greens and an understated sense of place that feels distinctly South African without relying on obvious cultural shorthand. I developed the concept across brand strategy, creative direction, visual identity, campaign art direction, packaging, fashion and beauty retail, digital commerce, flagship architecture and owned product development.
The identity retains the STUTTAFORDS name as the institution while introducing a restrained contemporary system built around warm bone, oxblood, near-black, mustard, forest green and dark chocolate. A secondary TT device was derived from the consecutive T’s within the STUTTAFORDS wordmark. Visually, the mark also carries a subtle second reading as the Roman numeral II — referencing a second life for the brand without needing to state it overtly.
The concept extends into STUTTAFORDS HOUSE, an owned product universe beginning with TT 01 and TT 02, a his-and-hers fragrance family designed to demonstrate that the revived STUTTAFORDS would not only curate desirable brands, but create objects worth visiting the store for.
Across fashion, beauty, digital shopping, packaging and the Cape Town flagship, the positioning is driven by one idea:
STUTTAFORDS does not simply stock brands. It selects what is worth knowing.
The campaign then moves beyond conventional retail imagery through a series of unexpected surreal interventions; an oxblood bird, a peacock inside the private-shopping suite and a mustard horse — allowing the world to remain sophisticated without becoming predictable.
The objective was never to create a brand-guidelines exercise. It was to create a world convincing enough to make someone stop and ask: “Wait — STUTTAFORDS is back?”
