RIVE IS (NOT) SPOOKY

🎃 Rive isn’t spooky! Well… not that much, at least. Over the past year, I’ve had several animator friends who wanted to learn Rive but got a little too spooked out by the state machine. And...Honestly, it gave me the chills at first too.

And that was my motivation to create this tiny Halloween project. To let me people know I was also scared at some point and sometimes still am! At the beginning, I was haunted by how joysticks and sliders, and rigging worked differently. Once I felt safe there, the real scare came: the state machine! But, over time, it stopped being scary at all.
To be fair, Rive drops new features so fast that every update gives me a mini jump scare. That’s what happened when Layouts came out… and again now with Data Binding! But after a bit of trial and error, I realised Rive isn’t scary. 👻 On this project I used a lot of drag and drop interactions with a different use of constraints on each. Per example for the finger mouse tracking animation mouse I made a joystick with the origin handle constrained to the mouse tracking. That way the finger will turn from side to side depending on where it is placed on the screen.
For this Itsy Bitsy rive spider I used a “cocktail“ of constraints and mouse tracking to have different physics depending on how far we drag the spider off the spider web.
And for the spider web moving along with the cursor I used a combination of meshes, bones and constraints with hitboxes changing the constraints strengths depending where the cursor is on the screen.
Please look a the video bellow for more details about the project 👻

I have created a small Halloween project to ease fears about Rive's complexity.
