UX/UI Case Study: A public transport mobile application for a Nigerian City
Imagine being new in a city and you don’t know how to move around because you feel, you might get lost?
Well you just might.
BACKGROUND
It was in 2017 when I visited Lagos (a State in Nigeria) for the first time.
Being dropped off at the bus park, I knew where I wanted to go but I was lost on how to get there.
I called my host and told him where I was, he couldn’t also give me a good direction so I was stuck.
Finally had to use an UBER and paid hugely for not knowing where I was going to and I wanted to experience this city and all its glory.
So I decided to create a solution to it.
DISCOVERY
I began research when I came back home to my own city. I discovered people in my city has same problem.
I divided the groups of users in two;
People who are new in the city and obviously do not know how to navigate their way around
People who live in the city but still don’t know how to locate a place or the amount needed to get there.
With this we were able to create an information architecture and a user flow for the application.
FUNCTIONALITY
Like every other navigation application, you input your destination and get directions to your destination but I decided to add some new features to it.
Detailed Direction: rather than the usual destination from your current location, I added a feature that display the following details;
From: this shows the current state of the user
Going to: this tells the user where the end point would be
Drop off at: this tells the user where to stop.
Price: this feature shows the price the user is expected to pay after every drop off. (This feature was added in other for the user not to be ripped off)
Emergency contact: User is allowed to add emergency contacts
NAVIGATION
The best solution we could use for our navigation was the Google Map which enables the user to track his current location and help with the possible public transport park closest to him/her.
OUTCOME
The app is still in its design stage and it will be adjusted to the Local traditions and rules of the city such as traffic jam, new road linkage.
What do you think of this concept? Please, share your feedback in the comment section below. We would love to discuss your ideas and thoughts on our project!
This is a personal project for users who feel the need to use a public transport when visiting a city. The app is able to give direction & pricing in real time.
