Growing up in Nigeria as a female, I watched how families shielded their daughters and how my friends and I would get so ashamed to speak about the things that affected us as young girls. When I hit puberty, I was so confused about the rapid changes my body faced in such a short time and some of my friends weren’t experiencing this at the same time I was and so I got so shy to speak about it.
My first period came and I was so ashamed and didn’t want to talk about it. Although my mum and aunts tried to be helpful by teaching me how to use a pad, I still didn’t understand puberty in its entirety. Leaving Nigeria in my teenage years and moving back in adulthood, I realised how much gap there is as it pertains to feminine health.
This is why we established Katwig Kare Foundation, to provide an encompassing wellness support to women across Nigeria and Africa.
