Nintendo Material Mastery: Reimagining an Icon Through Natural Materials
Nintendo Switch reimagined through the lens of material exploration, a conceptual exercise that questions what iconic consumer electronics could look and feel like if designed with natural textures and organic aesthetics.
Approach
This project started from a simple question: what happens when you take one of the most recognizable gaming devices in the world and rebuild it through a completely different material language?
Developed as part of a Lemanoosh online course, the challenge was to reinterpret the surface rather than redesign the form. I explored how natural, organic materials (cork, compressed fiber, raw textures )could replace the standard plastic vocabulary of consumer electronics without losing the product's identity or usability logic.
The result is a concept that keeps the Nintendo Switch DNA intact while pushing it into unexpected, tactile territory.
The Creative Challenge
The key tension in this project was respecting an iconic silhouette while making it feel completely new.
The visuals needed to:
Maintain instant recognition of the Nintendo Switch form factor
Show how organic materials translate across different parts: body, Joy-Cons, joysticks, packaging
Demonstrate material coherence as a design system, not just a surface swap
Create a sense of craftsmanship and warmth that contrasts with the product's tech nature
Creative Execution
Material research and selection (cork, natural fiber composites, bone white finishes)
Surface and texture definition across all components
Full product visualization: front, back, detail shots and joystick close-ups
Packaging concept developed with the same material language: nesting trays, mounting system, open-box moment
Photorealistic rendering in KeyShot with careful attention to material behavior and light response
Results & Impact
The outcome is a cohesive visual exploration that demonstrates how material choices alone can radically shift the perceived value and personality of a product.
The project communicates that great design doesn't always come from changing the shape, sometimes it comes from changing what something is made of, and how that makes you feel when you hold it.
