An Astrology App

My client approached me with a project for their astrology app, which already hosts 200+ astrologers and operates across 5+ languages. The app is based in South India and is well-established in the astrology space. They sought to enhance the user experience by redesigning some existing screens and adding new ones. I received this project through a freelance platform, and it involved creating 18-19 mobile app screens within just 9 days. The goal was to deliver user-friendly, visually appealing designs while addressing specific challenges shared by the client.

Information Overload: The app needed to showcase numerous services, requiring optimal space management without overcrowding the screens.

Multi-Language Support: With over 5 languages in use, maintaining consistent spacing and readability across all languages was critical.

Minimal Yet Unique Design: The client wanted designs that were: Minimalistic, avoiding overly fancy elements. Unique, to differentiate from competitors. Understandable to their audience, ensuring easy navigation and clarity.

Single-Page Preference: The client desired most elements to fit on one screen, which was challenging due to space constraints and the amount of content involved.

Colorful Yet Balanced Aesthetics: The client preferred colorful designs, but without overwhelming the user experience.

I carefully analyze the desired features and categorize them by importance. I then prioritize the essential elements for each screen and document them clearly for efficient implementation.

The client initially selected a single color for their app, but expressed a desire for a more colorful and visually appealing design. While I advised against introducing multiple colors due to potential aesthetic concerns, they insisted on incorporating them. I've proposed a solution that involves using color strategically to enhance the app's appearance without compromising its functionality or user experience. I wanted to experiment with a more modern design approach, but the client preferred a simpler, user-friendly design. I balanced these preferences by incorporating subtle design elements like content cards. Given the diverse linguistic content (5+ languages), I opted for a flexible design solution. By utilizing Auto Layout, the design can dynamically adjust to accommodate text variations in different languages.

The client initially requested a single-page design, which would have resulted in an excessively long and user-unfriendly screen. Despite explaining the potential drawbacks, the product manager insisted on this approach. To illustrate the consequences, I created a proof-of-concept single-page design. As expected, the client was not satisfied with the overwhelming layout and the challenges it posed for users. Recognizing the need for a more user-centered design, I revised the layout, incorporating proper design principles and UX best practices. While this required additional time and effort, the final design was well-received by the client

The client proposed a design where both the user input (astrological information) and the generated output (horoscope) would be displayed on the same page. After careful consideration and discussions with the development team, we concluded that this approach would not be practical. I explained the technical challenges and potential negative impacts to the client, who subsequently agreed to a different design solution..
