Pulse Athletics

We designed the app and brand for Pulse, a long distance running club built for people who show up in the cold, the rain and the early mornings. One tap to join the next run, a map of every start point, and a shop for the gear that gets you through the miles.

Overview

Run clubs usually live in group chats and story posts. People miss the time, lose the meeting spot and never know who else is coming. The apparel sits somewhere else entirely.

What we did

We built the app around one question; when is the next run? The home screen opens with the date in large type, the time, how many of your friends are going and how many spots are left. You join in one tap. Below that you get a recap of the last run and a row of upcoming runs you can filter.
Four tabs cover the rest. Home shows what’s next, Events lists every run, Map shows where each one starts and Shop sells the apparel. We kept the layout quiet and the type heavy, so photos from the runs carry the personality of the brand.
In founders' words:

I started Pulse because I wanted long-distance running to feel like something you do together, not alone with your headphones. Our runs were growing, but everything lived in group chats and people kept missing them. I wanted one place where you see the next run, know who’s coming and just show up. Running isn’t pretty. It’s early mornings, cold rain, sore legs and showing up anyway. That’s the feeling I wanted Pulse to have, raw and honest. The apparel and the app should look like the runs feel... gritty and real. At the end of the day we’re not here to look perfect, we’re here to keep going.”

Challenges

Run info was scattered across group chats and stories, so people missed runs or went to the wrong spot
Nobody could see who else was coming, which made it harder for new runners to join
The club and the apparel lived in different places, so the brand felt split in two
The app had to work in a few seconds, since people check it on the go, often right before a run
It needed to look as good as the brand without hiding the key info like date, time and spots left
