Adaptive Digital Menu Design

The Digital Menu that adapts to you

Project Overview

This is an innovative digital solution designed to transform the way users interact with restaurant menus. The goal was to create a more intuitive, accessible, and personalized dining experience while also improving operational efficiency for staff.

Key Features

Smart Allergen Filters: Users can easily filter out dishes containing allergens by selecting specific ingredients, receiving a tailored view of the menu in real time.
Personalized Dietary Preferences: Whether vegetarian, vegan, lactose intolerant, or following other dietary lifestyles, users can quickly find dishes that match their needs.
Mobile-First Experience: The interface is optimized for mobile devices, ensuring a smooth and responsive experience – easily accessible via QR code.
Inclusive Design: Special attention was given to accessibility, color contrast, and legibility, making the interface usable for a wide range of users.

Research

The first step was to find needs and pain points of future users. The problem was that there are lots of people who can use a digital menu in different location (restaurant, bar, hotel, etc...). Basing on those evidences, I selected a restricted group of people in order to be more efficient in the design.

Personas

In order to segment properly my future users, I created three personas who represents future customers.

Jean, a health-conscious customer with celiac disease

Jean is worried about going to restaurant or in general eating out because of food contamination. Indeed, he is gluten intolerant and he needs assurances on what is in the dishes he's going to order and he needs to feel safe about avoiding food contamination.

Alice, rare mustard allergic

Alice has a rare mustard allergy and she struggles to find safe options due to its hidden presence in sauces and processed foods. She needs some solution which can help her to be more reassured about what she is going to eat.

Cassie, a committed vegan

Cassie is a committed vegan who wants to know clearly if a dish is vegan friendly or not. She is frequently undecided about what to order and she finds difficult looking for vegan dishes among all available options.

My role

I was responsible for the UX/UI design, from user research to high-fidelity prototypes. In the end I have also received from some people their feedback about this solution, in order to enhance my skills and to understand which phases of the process needs more attention and time.

UX/UI Design

Future users will splash in the menu scanning a QR Code or via link.
Here they can see information about the restaurant and see the menu.
Opening the menu they can see the original version within the allergen for each dish. In this section they can also order the dish and see their cart.

Dishes' detail page reveals more information about the dish, in particular every allergen for each ingredient.

In the end, a modal can be used for filtering the menu and see just the dishes that are compatibiles with users' criteria.

Conclusion

Behind every dish is a different story, and this digital menu was designed to respect and support them all. Whether it’s a hidden allergen or a conscious lifestyle choice, the experience adapts — not the user. Because great design means everyone gets a seat at the table.
