Background: PeopleFirstHR is a human resources platform that focuses on enhancing employee experiences by simplifying HR processes, including scheduling and time-off management. As HR platforms become more competitive, it's crucial to offer user-friendly tools that help streamline workflows and improve employee satisfaction.
Objective: The primary objective of this project was to analyze the existing time-off request process in PeopleFirstHR and propose design improvements that would enhance usability and efficiency. Additionally, this project served as a preparatory exercise for my interview with Workday, allowing me to perform a competitor analysis and demonstrate my ability to identify areas for improvement within HR software.
Target Audience: The target audience for this project includes employees and HR managers using PeopleFirstHR to manage and approve time-off requests. The users vary in technical proficiency and work in diverse industries, making accessibility and ease of use key considerations
Approach: To ensure a comprehensive understanding of the user experience, the following approach was taken:
Research: I conducted an in-depth analysis of the current PeopleFirstHR time-off request process, gathering user feedback, examining common pain points, and reviewing industry standards. This research also included a competitor analysis, focusing on Workday’s time-off scheduling tools, to identify potential areas of improvement.
Ideation: Based on the research, I generated several design concepts aimed at simplifying the time-off request process, reducing the number of steps, and enhancing clarity. These ideas were designed with the goal of aligning with HR best practices and improving overall user satisfaction.
Wireframing and Prototyping: The selected design concepts were translated into low-fidelity wireframes and then refined into high-fidelity prototypes. User testing was conducted to validate the usability of the new design, ensuring that the process was intuitive and efficient.
Visual Design: After finalizing the UX, I developed a visual design that adhered to PeopleFirstHR’s brand guidelines while also incorporating modern design trends to create a more engaging user experience.
Competitor Analysis for Workday: As part of my preparation for the Workday interview, I used this project to demonstrate my ability to perform a competitor analysis. I identified specific features in PeopleFirstHR that could be improved or adapted in Workday’s interface, providing a strategic perspective on how these enhancements could benefit Workday's users.
Outcome: The redesigned time-off request interface simplifies the process by reducing unnecessary steps and providing clear guidance throughout the workflow. The new design is more intuitive, visually appealing, and aligns with HR industry standards. Additionally, the insights gained from this project provided a valuable foundation for discussions with Workday, showcasing my ability to contribute to the evolution of their product.
Next Steps: The next phase involves collaborating with the development team to implement the proposed design changes. This will include addressing any technical challenges and ensuring that the final product meets the intended design goals. Post-launch, it will be essential to monitor user feedback and metrics to evaluate the success of the new interface and make iterative improvements as needed.
