Company & Mission

Flow Health is a health technology company that provides solutions for healthcare providers, healthcare organisations and employers. The company's mission is to improve the quality of care by providing comprehensive and easy-to-use tools that help healthcare professionals better manage and understand their patients' health via various medical tests.

The problem

The legacy portal hindered lab workers due to manual data entry and use of multiple software systems, stemming from its limited functionality.
As workflows grew complex, the team postponed a full rebuild. The accumulating UX debt eventually prompted a complete overhaul, preserving only core elements.
In particular, the new way of receiving materials from the clients appeared - packages instead of separate species, so it could speed up the lab workflow.
A handful and insightful way of receiving and displaying packages was needed so a lab worker would know what package should be taken next instantly.

Business goals

- Maximise performance of laboratories in pandemic conditions.
- Reduce % of overdue orders.
- Increase transparency, accuracy and security of medical data.

Design strategy

- Emphasize legibility — use bolding and bigger headers to highlight key information and promote scannability. Distinguish numbers from text to improve flow of the page.
- Keep it simple — short, sweet, and to the point. Avoid redundant information and use everyday language.
- Update icons and introduce illustrations. Highlight visuals to increase appeal.

Solution

Visual dashboard, a board with groups of items by priority. It can be switched to the table view so user can filter data more precisely. We also created a new dashboard for quick view of crucial lab data — used by lab managers much.

Why this solution?

After gathering references, studying similar solutions and a few brainstorming sessions with the team and some customer interviews we landed on this concept and understood what has to be built. Only small iterations were made.

Results

- Overdue orders dropped significantly, by 70%.
- Turnaround time of each order dropped by 20-30%, depending on it’s priority.
- Packages information was stored only in our system (replacing Airtable), making it closer to the target state - single entry point for all labs data.
