AI Teacher — Designing Trustworthy Conversation Practice

Role: Product & Interaction Design Industry: EdTech · AI-assisted language learning Focus: Speaking practice · Feedback · Error recovery

Overview

Language practice should feel like progress, even when the conversation takes an unexpected turn. AI Teacher explores how learners prepare for a situation, participate in a guided roleplay, understand feedback and recover when voice input or dialogue does not work as expected.

The Challenge

Speaking with an AI partner can feel open-ended. Learners may not know what to say, whether a response was understood or how to continue after a recognition error. The experience needed to offer enough guidance for a useful lesson without reducing conversation to a rigid script.

My Contribution

I worked on the product behavior and interaction design for AI-assisted practice, from lesson preparation through feedback and recovery. Research into lesson materials and learner feedback helped identify recurring difficulties with speech recognition and continuation after errors.
Learning journey: connected preparation, roleplay and next-step guidance into one experience.
Conversation design: created clearer states for starting and continuing scenario-based practice.
Feedback: structured responses around what learners can understand and try next.
Recovery: designed ways to retry, clarify or continue when speech input was misunderstood.
Trust: made uncertainty and the next action more understandable throughout the lesson.

Key Experience Decisions

Preparation creates confidence

Before a learner speaks, the interface establishes the situation and purpose of the activity. A clear setup helps learners focus on practicing rather than deciphering what the product expects.

Practice needs momentum

The roleplay is organized around a meaningful scenario, with interaction cues that help learners stay engaged while leaving room for natural responses.

Feedback should invite another attempt

Instead of treating feedback as an end screen, the experience makes it part of the learning loop: understand, adjust and continue.

Recovery is part of the lesson

When voice recognition or the dialogue breaks down, clear recovery actions let learners continue without losing the thread of the activity.

Deliverables

The work includes experience flows for Preparation, Roleplay and Recovery, supported by UI designs and a lesson-flow walkthrough.

Outcome

The work delivered connected flows for preparation, conversation practice, feedback and recovery, including next-step guidance when voice recognition or the conversation fails.
