Two dashboards were quietly tracking overlapping data, and one quarterly number came close to being counted twice across two reports. I caught the overlap before the report went out and consolidated reporting so every report now pulls from a single source of truth.
The challenge
When two dashboards draw on overlapping data, the same activity can show up in both and inflate a combined total. Each dashboard looked correct on its own, so the duplication was easy to miss until the numbers were brought together for a quarterly report.
What I did
Identified that two dashboards were tracking overlapping data behind the same quarterly figure.
Held the number before publishing, so the report never went out double-counted.
Consolidated reporting onto one source of truth, so reports pull from one place instead of two that can disagree.
Outcome
The quarterly report went out without the double count, and reporting now runs from a single source of truth. A good number is only as good as the one place it actually comes from. No client name or additional metrics are included; the original post is linked below.
