One quarterly number almost got double-counted across two reports.
Two dashboards were quietly tracking overlapping data. Caught before it went out now there's one source of truth the reports pull from, not two that can disagree.
→ A good number is only as good as the one place it actually comes from

I'd reconcile that quarterly number against unique source event IDs before publishing. Then a new dashboard can't quietly bring the double count back.

I agree with you, thank you

The 'one source of truth' fix holds until someone builds a third dashboard six months later and forgets the rule. More durable approach: make the lineage machine-readable. Tag each metric at the point of definition with a canonical ID, so any downstream consumer has to reference...

Spotting the overlap before release saves the quarter from inflated numbers and keeps the team aligned.

Great catch before it shipped. I like the “one source of truth” framing - pulling reports from one validated source makes it much harder for a duplicate dashboard to quietly skew the number again.
