I was hired to identify and resolve technical SEO issues that were preventing a WordPress website from reaching its search visibility potential. The site had performance problems, crawl errors, and structural gaps that needed systematic fixing.
The Challenge
The website had a range of technical issues compounding on each other: slow page load times hurting both user experience and rankings, crawl errors preventing Google from indexing key pages, missing structured data, a non-optimized mobile experience, and messy URL structures with broken redirects. These problems were invisible to the site owner but clearly visible to search engines.
My Approach
I used SEMrush and Yoast SEO to run a full technical audit, then worked through fixes in priority order:
Website Crawling: Ran a complete site crawl to map every indexation issue, orphan page, and crawl error. Fixed blocked resources and ensured all important pages were discoverable.
Website Speed Optimization: Compressed images, enabled browser caching, minified CSS/JS, and optimized server response times. Focused on Core Web Vitals (LCP, FID, CLS) to meet Google's performance thresholds.
Mobile-Friendliness: Tested every template and page type on mobile devices. Fixed layout shifts, tap target sizing, and responsive breakpoints that were degrading the mobile experience.
Structured Data Implementation: Added schema markup (Organization, Article, FAQ, Breadcrumb) to help search engines understand the site's content and enable rich snippet eligibility.
XML Sitemap and Robots.txt Optimization: Rebuilt the sitemap to include only indexable, canonical URLs. Updated robots.txt to remove accidental blocks and streamline crawl paths.
HTTPS, URL Structure and Redirection Fixes: Cleaned up redirect chains, fixed mixed content issues, and standardized URL formats to eliminate duplicate content signals.
The Outcome
After resolving these technical issues, the site's performance improved across the board: faster load times, cleaner crawl paths, proper indexation of key pages, and a mobile experience that met Google's standards. The technical foundation was solid enough to support ongoing content and link building efforts without legacy issues dragging results down.
