My name’s Morgan. I’m the Co-Founder and Executive Director of LFBS.
LFBS works to keep families together by addressing the root causes of separation and poverty through programming in child well-being and development, family and community development, advocacy of child rights, and community health.
I want to ask you a favor, one that many people say I shouldn’t ask of you…
Don’t donate to Haitian orphanages.
Many don’t think twice about doing so. After all, it seems like the right thing to do.
Maybe you think like many others do that the majority of these children don’t have parents to live with.
But at least they get to live in an orphanage — a place where they’re taken care of rather than being in harm’s way.
But the sad reality is that this isn’t the case in Haiti.
Here’s some quick data:
80% of children in Haitian orphanages have at least 1 living parent
95% of Haitian orphanages failed to meet national standards of care in a 2018 audit made to 750+ of these institutions
80 years of research shows that institutionalized children are at more at risk to suffer harmful outcomes such as suicide, crime, trafficking, prostitution, homelessness and poor health
Corrupt orphanages are common in Haiti, taking part in awful practices like abuse, neglect, slavery and human trafficking with children
Don’t let them play tricks on you anymore.
