The African Youth and Climate Change Challenges.
Keywords: Climate Change, Global Warming, Africa, Planet
The Earth’s climate is a complex and interconnected system, and seemingly small changes in one part of the system can lead to significant and often unpredictable consequences for the entire planet. This underscores the urgency of addressing climate change through global cooperation and sustainable practices to mitigate the potential negative impacts on our environment and societies.
The butterfly effect highlights the importance of understanding that seemingly minor actions, such as burning fossil fuels or deforestation in one region, can have global consequences. The cumulative impact of these actions contributes to the overall warming of the planet and the disruption of climate patterns.
Climate change is a global challenge that transcends borders, impacting communities and ecosystems worldwide. However, its effects are disproportionately felt in regions like Africa, where vulnerability is heightened due to socioeconomic factors and limited resources.
To effectively combat climate change and mitigate its impacts in Africa, international cooperation is imperative as all hands should be on deck.
Addressing the impacts of climate change in Africa requires both mitigation efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions globally and adaptation strategies to build resilience at the local level. Here are some ways in which international cooperation can strengthen the fight against climate change in Africa.
Youths are the leaders of now and the next generation and they must be at the forefront of planning and execution of decisions that concern them. In Africa, youths can be categorized into three categories; those who are not climate aware or in denial, those who are climate aware but lack the tools and resources to execute climate action projects, and those who are already leading climate action in their community, but their efforts are not being recognized, supported, or incentivized in other to help them do more.
International cooperation can strengthen the fight against climate action by providing training for youths who are not aware of climate change and the role they have to play in mitigating it, providing support for those who lack resources to execute community-based projects that can positively reduce the effect of climate change and also set up reward and recognition systems for youths who are already taking action as this would encourage them to do more.
While the effect of climate change is high in Africa, another issue is the lack of access to electricity and clean cooking. According to the International Energy Agency, over 600 million Africans lack access to electricity and 900 million people lack access to clean cooking, this doesn’t only impact public health but also increases the amount of greenhouse gases in the environment.
International cooperation can invest in electricity and clean cooking as one of the ways to reduce the cost of any technology is to invest in it to make the price competitive so that it would be affordable to people in low- and medium-income continents like Africa. International cooperation can help build resilient infrastructure, develop sustainable energy sources, and implement strategies to cope with the impacts of climate change.
Capacity building in technological development is another way to reduce the effect of climate change. Since Africa lacks the technical know-how of some machines and instruments, it is imperative to ensure that African youth are been trained in technologically advanced countries for a while so they can be useful to their continent.
Youth should be trained on key aspects of climate diplomacy such as international negotiation, multilateral agreement, climate security, and emission reduction targets as this would help them understand discussions, agreements, and actions aimed at mitigating the impacts of climate change, adapting to its effects, and fostering international cooperation to achieve common climate goals.
While organizations like Green Climate Fund (GCF) AfDB, UNEP, World Bank, Konrad Adenauer Foundation, and Global Environmental Facility GEF, through their various initiatives and collaborations, demonstrate how international cooperation has been instrumental in supporting Africa’s fight against climate change over the past decade, there is still a lot to be done based on Africa’s increasing population, Africa has a population of 1.4 billion people and is projected to reach 2.5 billion people in 2050.
According to Antonio Guterres “The climate emergency is a race we are losing, but it is a race we can win” because, through shared commitments and support, international cooperation becomes a vital catalyst for addressing the unique challenges that climate change poses to Africa, ultimately contributing to a more sustainable and resilient future for the continent.
