Layout & Illustration For: Perceptions- Magazine of the Arts

Perceptions is the Magazine of the Arts publication organized annually by students and staff at Mt.Hood Community College in Gresham, Oregon. Submissions worldwide in arts, short stories, poems, photography, and music (only in the digital version) are included. For the 2022 edition, the design team who primarily took care of the cover and layout included Hannah Hart, Carey Cramer, Ashton Hoffman, and myself.

The final cover design was created by the editorial team picking and choosing which parts of the designers' cover proposals they liked. Once we got that feedback, the design team also discussed how it should look. The Stark Street Bridge and Mt. Hood were used because the client wanted to show local landmarks to further show it is a local publication. My primary role regarding the cover was to provide another set of eyes and help fine-tune details.

The interior required a layout that would let each work shine in its own way while keeping the overall look of the work cohesive. To create a layout that would fulfill those needs, the design team presented different options, and once one was chosen, we fine-tuned it and worked on adding the content. My role in the layout was to put together a selection of fonts for the team to choose from and then work specifically on applying the layout system to the photography entries and like with the cover going through as another set of eyes fine-tuning the little details and making sure everything was as it should be.

The color palette for the cover was put together by pulling a few colors from one of the cover proposals and then building it out with a few more colors. The font was chosen to be read quickly and simply enough to go with all the different art mediums to be displayed in the publication without taking too much attention from the artwork.
