Hey Ernesto: Brand Strategy Before Visual Identity

A brand for valuable ideas

Self-initiated brand strategy for Hey Ernesto, my independent brand practice.
Hey Ernesto began with a question: what does a valuable idea need to be understood, chosen, and sustained over time?
Before creating a visual identity, I needed to define the direction behind it.

The strategic challenge

The key strategic decision was to focus on solo founders building their brand alone, rather than trying to speak to every founder with a valuable idea.
For Hey Ernesto, that meant deciding who the practice is for, what kind of work it is built to do, and the principles that should guide every message and design decision.

The strategy at a glance

Audience Solo founders building their brand alone who need clarity before investing in design.
Positioning A strategy-first brand practice for founders building something meaningful with intention.
Brand promise Turn complex ideas into clear direction, actionable decisions, and a brand founders can understand and use.
Vision Help create a world where founders with valuable ideas can be heard, understood, and chosen.

The decisions behind the brand

Strategy before design

Design needs a clear idea behind it. Before choosing colours, typefaces, or symbols, a brand needs to know what it wants to say and who it wants to reach.
For founders, this starts with the decisions that shape how an offer is understood and the value clients see in it. Design then gives those decisions form.

A founder-led process

Hey Ernesto is built for founders who want to take part in the work: sharing context, asking questions, and making decisions with intention.
The goal is a brand that feels useful to the people building it, not a set of visual assets they cannot confidently use.

Values in practice

Clarity Complex ideas become actionable plans and tailored roadmaps, using clear language without agency jargon.
Empowerment The process moves founders from uncertainty to decisions they can act on, building confidence and autonomy over their brand.
Vitality Brand building is a shared creative process with room to explore, test ideas, and enjoy the work as the brand takes shape.

What this strategy created

This foundation gave Hey Ernesto:
A clearer way to describe the practice and its value.
A defined audience and working relationship.
A focused messaging direction.
A set of principles for evaluating future opportunities.
A strategic brief for the visual identity.
A working strategic foundation for positioning, messaging, and visual decisions.
A working strategic foundation for positioning, messaging, and visual decisions.

From strategy to visual identity

The next step was turning these decisions into a visual system for Hey Ernesto.
