A thriving locum community ran on Telegram and WhatsApp. My job: build a real platform that felt just as fast — without the risk of getting banned.

Founder Abiola had already built something rare: a genuinely active community of locum doctors, nurses, and surgeons — ~30,000 on Telegram, ~20,000 on WhatsApp, plus Twitter, matching healthcare workers to shifts fast, every day.

But rented platforms mean rented risk. Bans, outages, and zero ownership of the community or its data. It was time to move onto a real platform - without losing the speed that made the community work in the first place.

Sole UI/UX designer, working directly alongside the founder and a developer as one small team. I designed the marketing site, job seeker and recruiter experience — end to end.

Building "a job board" is easy. Building one that feels as simple as posting in a WhatsApp group is not.

On Telegram and WhatsApp, hospitals just typed what they needed and doctors just replied. No forms, no fields, no learning curve. With hundreds of doctors, nurses, and surgeons now on a real platform, the challenge was designing a structured system — job requests, applications, profiles — that felt just as effortless as typing a message, so nobody felt like they'd traded something simple for something clunky.

Locums needed to find and apply to shifts with the same low effort as replying in a group chat — browse, apply, track status, done.

Hospitals don't always want to browse candidates — sometimes they just need a role filled. So recruiters can post a job, and MLJ put's it in front of the right healthcare workers for it.

MedLocumJobs wasn't just matching shifts — it was protecting the people filling them.

When a hospital under-pays, mistreats staff, or a dispute arises, MLJ steps in as a mediator, and where needed, involves a standby lawyer to enforce fair payment.

That advocacy — already trusted within the community — needed to be visible and accessible in the platform itself, not just something people knew about informally.

No more ban/outage risk — the community finally lives on infrastructure the founder owns

Real structured data — proper profiles and job details instead of scrollable chat history

Built-in escrow system — protection for healthcare workers, not just a matching engine

Still simple — designed to feel as easy as the group chats it's replacing, so no one feels like they downgraded

MedicalLocumJobs is in development, launching soon. A planned education/webinar arm - paid courses and training for healthcare workers - is on the roadmap for a future phase.
