Modernizing Practice Management for Center for Hypertension and Internal Medicine (CHIM)

Project Summary

The Center for Hypertension and Internal Medicine (CHIM) required a complete overhaul of their legacy practice management system. The existing interface was cluttered and outdated, making it difficult for staff to manage patient throughput, inventory, and clinical tasks efficiently. I led the end-to-end redesign, introducing a modern design system and re-architecting the platform to include vital new modules such as Inventory Management and Employee Task Tracking.

My Role & Deliverables

As the sole Product Designer, I was responsible for auditing the existing system and defining the new Information Architecture (IA) to support scalable feature growth.
Key Deliverables:
UX Audit & Strategy: Analyzed the legacy system to identify pain points in navigation and data visualization.
Information Architecture: Restructured the sitemap to accommodate new features like Inventory and RPM (Remote Patient Monitoring).
UI Design System: Created a clean, accessibility-focused design language using consistent iconography, chips for status, and clear typography.
High-Fidelity Screens: Designed complex flows for Order Entry, Inventory Tracking, and Patient Queues.
Developer Handoff: Provided detailed specs for grid behaviors, component states (e.g., inventory low-stock alerts), and interaction models.

The New Dashboard

We transformed the main landing page into a dynamic "Command Center" for the practice.
Patient Status Chips: Replaced static lists with interactive status filters (Active, No-Show, Telehealth, Checked Out).
Patient Cards: Instead of a single line of text, each patient is represented by a card showing their Insurance, Provider, and immediate "Orders/Tasks."
Visual Urgency: Critical alerts (e.g., "Test(s) due: Annual labs") are highlighted in orange text within the card for immediate visibility.

Inventory Management Module

This was a net-new feature designed to prevent stockouts of critical supplies.
Visual Tracking: Used progress bars to visualize stock levels for items like "Lisinopril" or "iHealth Devices."
Smart Categorization: Users can filter inventory by type (Vaccine, Injection, RPM, Consumable).
Lot Management: Detailed cards display Expiration Dates and Lot Numbers, crucial for compliance and safety audits.

Streamlined Order Entry

The ordering process was simplified using a "shopping cart" mental model.
Chip Selection: Common orders (Labs, Procedures, Injections) are available as one-tap chips.
Favorites: A "Favorites" section allows providers to quickly access their most frequently ordered tests, reducing click depth.
Categorization: Orders are visually grouped into "Today" (immediate action) vs. "Scheduled" (future action).

Current Status: Phased Development

This redesign is part of a long-term modernization strategy. Rather than a "big bang" launch, we are releasing improvements in phases:
Completed: Core dashboard redesign, Patient Management, and Inventory basics.
In Progress: We are currently designing and developing deeper modules for Employee Attendance, PTO Requests, and advanced Reporting. These features are being slowly rolled out to minimize disruption to the clinic's daily operations.
